Yes. The setup on my 4Runner is nearly the same. I can fit my hand between the tire and UCA.

Sorry for reviving an old post. I have 285/75/16s on a 3” lift (Fox 2.5 DSCs, 600lb coils, 16x8 wheels) and did not need a CMC with plenty of room to spare. The BF KM3s are a bit of an overkill, so I plan on swapping them with 295/75/16s. I’m ready to do a CMC if needed, but I ‘might’ get away without it.

This thread has been quiet for a few weeks but I have some questions for the more experienced tire folks. But first, a little about my current setup...I've got a 3rd gen with OME BP-51s and OME UCAs, giving about a 2.5in lift. Still rocking the stock 265/70/r16 Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs on TRD pro wheels that came on the truck though so its looking like I skipped leg day. Very ready for bigger tires and want that true 33, which brings me here. I've got a CMR kit ready & waiting to be welded on, I'm also not averse to pinch weld/fender liner trimming or anything else like that.

One concern I do have is UCA rubbing. I'm pretty sure the TRD pro wheels I have are 0 offset... will I need spacers to make sure they clear the UCA? If so..how much? Like .5" ? Curious what other people have had success with. I've also seen that people will mess with backspacing to address this issue..I've got the lifetime alignment with Firestone, what would I need to tell the tech to make sure he spaces it out correctly?

My other question is about the tires themselves...I'm gonna go with 295/75/r16s and I see a lot of people going with the Cooper Discoverer AT3 XLT (at least in the earlier days of this thread). Are those highly recommended over KO2s or Toyo A/T3s? I don't do a lot of rock crawling but I need something that is good in snow and rocky trails.

Love the content of this thread so far. I'll post pics once I make a decision and mount the new tires.

Your current wheels from the factory come with a very positive offset, so if you were to run those and the new 295s, they will indefinitely rub on the UCA. I’d recommend a 0.75” wheel spacer at the very least, or run a 0 offset/negative offset wheel. The backspacing itself refers to the mounting surface of the wheel and the distance to the back lip of the wheel, while offset is the distance from the mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. These two terms are used interchangeably. Really, it’s two different ways to measure “stance”, or “aggressiveness” of wheels.

This is how you get “wheel poke”, which is just how far the tires stick past the fenders. Most Tacoma owners mess with the backspacing by finding the right wheel offset/spacer combo to either achieve a certain look, to create as much clearance as possible before trimming or CMCs, or both.

As far as the tires, it’s a great performance/dollar ratio. Definitely less expensive than a KO2, and slightly less than Toyo. I happened to get a really good deal on the Cooper Tire, so that’s what I currently run. Good luck, hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the response. I've recently decided to go ahead and buy new wheels too.. I want to make the upgrade from 16s to 17s. Over the past few weeks I think I was able to wrap my head around backspacing as well... I originally thought it had to do with caster or something. Looking at Method 703s tho and the 17" wheel has 0 offset and 4.75" backspacing. Will that clear UCAs? If not, do you know what bs is required at minimum to keep everything kosher? I want to try and avoid spacers if possible.

The coopers look good on your Tacoma, definitely leaning that way over the KO2s and Toyos.

I’m sure those should be ok. Generally anything with a zero offset clears UCAs, and if not you can always go the spacer route in addition to your wheel pick. Which, I was actually looking at a set of those 703s myself lol. They’re sharp. Also for reference; I have a 0 offset, 4.50” backspacing wheel, with 1.0” spacers front and 0.75” spacers rear. Definitely need a CMC.

Also thanks! I like those tires a lot. Even regular price it’s a solid deal compared to other tires in that size. Real grippy in the rain and they’re quiet.

I'm not sure about 3rd Gen Tacoma, but 2nd gen Tacoma wheels are usually +30 offset, whereas 4Runner and FJ wheels are +15. I had aggressive 285s on 4Runner wheels and cleared the UCA. A 0 offset for 295s should be ok.

If you run wheel spacers as thin as 0.75", wouldn't you have to trim the studs?

Okay nice, good to know that 0 offset is generally okay.

Yea the 703s look mean, I'm also digging the SCS f5s. The only problem is that they are sold out and they have no clue when they'll be restocked...at least it gives me time to accumulate funds lmao

Check the back of your wheels for pockets. It’ll allow some room for the excess stock studs
