Trying to decide between these 2 tires.. 16" wheel. Help me decide!!

    Pros:
    Hankook-
Bigger tire = more ground clearance
    Load D range
    Cheaper
    Longevity

    MTR-
    Best tread design
    Quiet
    Big for a 285
    Soft rubber compound

    Cons:
    Hankook-
Bigger tire = Less power and more rubbing
    Not as good reviews
    No Kevlar

    MTR-
    Not as long lasting
    More expensive
    Heavier
    Load E range

I love the Hankook personally but that MTR has a far tougher carcass and sidewalls if you are going to go offroad.

I'd also look into the Cooper ST Maxx if you want Kevlar and some savings over the MTR. Softer material than the Hankook as well but far tougher than a Duratrac or similar tire. Not sure it's available in the size you want though.

Everyone here runs MTR's on their trucks and is a bit jaded towards them for some reason. I decided to go with the Cooper instead just to try it out over the MTR because I wanted to try tall and skinnies, I couldn't be happier with the Cooper, it's gone through a ton of abuse that has wrecked the Duratracs on other trucks but left my Coopers and other peoples MTR's without a scratch.

I have heard a lot of good reviews on those but I want more aggressive tread.

    Also don't want a 255, 285 or 295

MTR is your best bet then. IMHO the Cooper ST Maxx does about as well as the Hankook in straight mud, but if you're going for the look and functionality it's pretty hard to beat the MTR.

Just to clarify, the MTR will be better in the mud than the ST maxx because of that outside open portion. It all depends on what you need.

My buddy has had bfg mud original, bfg km, bfg at, Mtr Kevlar, Yokohama geolander, and general red letter. We live in so cal and he said the generals worked best. They were used on a combination of explorer sport trac lifted, Land Rover defender 90 lifted, and a hummer h1. So kind of hard to tell if these reviews will hold true if used on a Tacoma. The tires performed worst to best in the order I mentioned.

Worked best in what? I can't recommend the Geolander with a straight face for anything other than hard surfaces. Are you talking about running around in the desert?

I have been rocking the 295 kooks for the past two summers, they have been great, around 15k on them. Running them in everything from the CO rocks and roots and Moab slickrock and sand, to sharp wyoming shale, they have taken everything I have thrown at them. Run them mostly offroad as I don't DD my truck for long non-wheeling trips, but they are great on road as well. The pluses you have listed are what sold me on them over the MTRs or Toyos. Good looking tire too. @Squeaky Penguin has been running them the past year as well based on my positive reviews of them.

Only damage I have received was a slash to the side wall from a culvert, this tire had less than 200 miles on it when it happened, I doubt that an MTR or any other tire would have fared any better. Discount tire got me rolling on a new one for $15.

Wow thats awesome! I did order tires last night though, went with the MTR's. So many people rant and rave over them I need to see what all the hype is about haha plus I need to CMC and get heavier duty coils on my Kings. Depending on how I like these ill probably try the hankooks next in 295!

Desert. durability is the main reason,, great pavement wear on the defender 90.

He says the grabbers were best overall but that was on a hummer with 40s so how can u compare really. The defender runs 265.

How are you liking these? I know they perform off-road, but how are they on-road and with snow? How's their noise?

    Thanks.

AMAZING. Ill never get a different tire for wheeling. Road manners are very good, they balanced well, and very good off road. They are a little noisy but so is every other mud terrain tire, plus my truck is loud enough so I don't really notice it just turn the radio up. In snow they are beast, broke through a foot of fresh snow, turned around in a spot. My buddy on 285 duratracs followed and got stuck (even with a locked rear, I don't have a locker). I've aired them down to 8psi for snow and they did great

I guess I'll put these at the top of the short-list. Still considering the ST MAXX (255/80), but they're heavy as hell. The 255/75 MT/R's are C-rated and "only" 52 lbs, and I still won't ever have to worry about their sidewalls. A half-inch shorter than the MAXX, but very aggressive. I think the MT/R's look killer.

You can't beat the looks of the MTR, but performance is amazing. I think a big part of it is the lug spacing. Also I didn't get mine sipped besides what they come with and i've never spun out/skid on wet roads going around corners
