Dakine Tailgate pad, they are freakn awesome. Used one for my 29er on both tacomas I have had. I am going to Tundra next, I cannot deal with the small bed anymore :(

I'm digging this idea....anyone try it yet? Looks like I see a roof rack in my future. Been wanting one anyways for my Kayak/lumber.

I'd need a good way to lock it to the crossbar, and a quick way to remove it to fold the bars up. Any ideas?

I've thought of this and was honestly hoping someone on here had tried it and could report. Looks like I'll be trying it. Thanks!

Get a hitch rack and never look back. Something that comes off easily. I have a cheap Saris rack I use three times a week. It’s quicker to remove the rack from the hitch, than remove your front wheel from your bike.

    I would not go back.

Actually easier said than done with a 29” wheel MTB.

My 29er fits in my 1st gen short bed with the front wheel off.

Try checking to see if it will fit by pretending the fork mount is on the FLOOR of the bed and not up high. I bet it will fit.

You'll likely want to just mount some fork mounts to a 2x4 and put it across the front floor of the bed.

What I am thinking is getting this - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Roof-Rack-...rksid=p2047675.c100752.m1982&autorefresh=true

And using the front part of this - https://www.yakima.com/forkchop I measured out with my scott spark and it looks like it would tuck up nicely behind the cab.

Bungee would hold down the rear using the tie downs.

I'm very curious to know how this turns out. It seems like you may have to figure something out to keep the crankset from making contact on the back glass. I'm liking the idea though.

Sorry, I just like stirring the pot with cyclists. They all look like $100 bicycles to me.

I think it will be far enough not to hit. Just looking at my 27.5 with 175mm cranks and guessing where the bars would fall. I have been wanting an excuse to get the factory roof rails and seeing the knock offs for a fraction of the price make it even better. Just trying to justify the $150 for the Yakima attachment. There are probably cheaper alternatives.

Yeah, you sound like my wife. although I did let her think my current bike was $500 since that is what I got out of the ATM. She didn't notice the paypal for the balance!

Maybe, but if it can't hold up to anything rougher than being gingerly laid into the bed like a sick old woman then I don't want to go careening down a trail on it, either.

@rageman I recently came across the same problem... what I do is place the rear wheel on a coiled up recovery strap (which lives in my bed anyways) and the tire clears the tailgate when closed. Voila... no need for fancy stuff, just raise the rear up a little, and as a side note the bike doesnt move one bit with the 15 dollar fork mount I use so I dont fear driving spiritedly with my bike hooked up.

If i go camping and the bed is full of stuff, I literally pick up the bike and place it on top... no worries there either.

You bought a little truck what did you expect? Either get a small enclosed trailer or purchase something with a 6+ foot bed.

A tailgate pad is the easiest solution to this problem.

If no one said this yet - if you use a Kuat 15mm Boost fork mount on top of that bulkhead cap instead of inside the rail system, you'll likley fit. My Stache (L) 29+ fits in this config.
