or ya know a tailgate pad...

even with a long bed a 29er with a big wheel base will not fit perfectly lengthwise for loading up 3 or 4 bikes in the bed with mounts or tiedowns. the new SBC Enduro in large (S4) has a wheel base of 1274mm (yes we've stopped using road bike geometry on mountain bikes)and the outside diameter of a 29er wheel with some big meats is ~750mm so you are looking at an overall length of these newer bikes at around 6'-8" [2024mm] . Not sure how you are going to squeeze a couple of bikes like that into a 6' bed.

I bought the OEM rack specifically for kayaks, paddle boards, and lumber. I also take my family biking and camping, and we use the Dakine pad. I wouldn’t mess with rigging a clamp or anything to the OEM crossbar—it seems like a poor solution when there are so many better ones out there.

I just take the tailgate off if I load the bed down with MTBs (I use the same front rail mount setup you have). Takes two seconds to pop it on/off and easier to load/unload stuff when you get to the trails.

If that was enough to make it fit, that plastic tailgate cover is only $164 if you wanted to replace it later. That's cheaper than a lot of the rack solutions.

What is the harm in taking off the front wheel, mounting the bike by the fork to something like a RockyMount, and then just angling the bike so it fits diagonally? Is driving with the bike at an angle really going to damage the bike fork?

I had a tailgate pad for about a week before I got a Thule hitch rack and never looked back.

I mounted a filzer boost fork mount to a 2x6 and then maneuvered it so the rear wheel could set in the drivers side corner and the bike slant right to fit within the camper shell. I took a brief test drive and the bike did not move. I'll bungee the wheel to the frame and can route my cable and lock setup to the bed d-rings for security. I'll use this for longer highway drives and use my 1up bike rack for local rides.

I worked in a Bicycle shop that had Bicycles made in China that cost more than many Motorcycles made in Italy, China, or the USA. My New Kawasaki Versys, Suzuki DR-650, and SV650 all cost about the same either of my Road bicycles, but they are both full Customs hand built in the USA.
