A lot of Korean cars have them, as well as BMWs. I assume if they're gonna use cartridge filters this time around, the rest of Toyota's lineup will do the same

My solution is "let the dealer do it" I have always taken my vehicles to the dealer for oil changes ESPECIALLY when under warranty. IT doesn't cost all that much more when you figure in the time and mess. The Goodwill pays off when there is an issue as well if they know you pay for services there.

It's great until you start finding tools and garbage left under the hood. I've also known several dealers that have been caught not doing everything they are charging for, ie not using synthetic and charging for it or, worse, they don't change the oil at all every second time.

Then again, when you buy a new truck every year, who cares about those things.

Cartridge filters are regressive technology. They now allow dealers to not have to change the filter during an oil change. How would you know? I remember cars of the 1950's had them. Ah progress!

They are a hell of a lot cheaper to make. Probably save millions a year by using them. Plus it's reducing waste. Paper element will break down over time, metal will not.

They may be cheaper to make but no cheaper to buy. I have a Prius with a cartridge filter that cost the same as my spin on Tacoma filter. Not cheaper for the consumer. Just a PIA.

Toyota has been using them since 2004. The Tacoma is one of the last engines to switch over.

As for why, it's mostly an eco thing and not having to dispose of a metal housing with every oil change.

I guess that makes sense. Just seems like it is difficult to verify like others have said. Sigh.

The paper filter will offset dumping the used motor oil in the river behind my house

One can never have too many light bars.
I always thought the 2nd gen oil filter placement was one of the perks and it made oil changes take less than 10 minutes if I didn't stop and have a beer between draining the oil and pouring in the new stuff. My brother has a 1993 Nissan 300ZXTT and he stares in envy as I can finish an oil change faster than he can get his car on jack stands. This new filter seems like it will take longer and is more complicated.
