3-4k SHIT. I paid $1800 to a company that just does gears. I travel to the Sierras quite a bit and it surely does have a difference. 7-9k feet in altitude. Bro gear it, you will not regret it. Just find a better shop that specializes in gearing.

I mean, I got quotes from Slee Offroad (4300 bucks) Mountain Yotas (3800 bucks) and 3d Offroad (3100 bucks)
All of these quotes include master rebuild kits and the ECGS clamshell bushing installed

Where in Colorado would you guys recommend?

Your truck is brand new so the master kit is not necessary. All you need is gears and a gear installer. These shops should now this if not stay far away. The bushing is installed easily with the axle out.
I'm in California so I can't refer anybody in Colorado but I'm sure if you ask in another thread you'll find a good shop a lot cheaper.

What kind of oil are you guys running that have had these engine failures? Something doesn’t seem right. Running the correct 0w-20 full synthetic? 10k plus oil change intervals? I’m running amsoil signature series 0w20 and still planning on changing the oil every 5k miles.

    Lol, thanks?

From the searching I've done on here, seems like all I need is a supercharger, gears, lift, new headunit and cameras, and the seats out of a Landcruiser, and this thing will be good to go.

Dry sump system would eliminate all of this. Would need some reworking of the oil return passages but thats simple to do.

Was at 17k plus feet for three weeks straight in Peru. No issues. Wouldn’t worry about Colorado elevations at all. If your Tacoma is at altitude be happy you got it to fly.

Valid questioning though these 2gr-fks motors are built extremely well. They have oil jets spraying oil directly onto the bottom of the pistons.

Lots of manufacturers have oil jets in their engines.

Before my Tacoma, I had a 1994 Chevy Suburban K2500 Silverado with the 6.5 Turbo Diesel that had a crap ton of blowby. I sourced a military takeout for a reputable seller. The long block I got was sold as a TD though did not had piston oil squirters which means it was not a turbo block. And it had 3 out of 8 cylinders of bad lifters with bent pushrods. And the cam bearings were loose.

Post rebuild I've moved to a custom e-fan conversion, PCV & CCV filters, full exhaust, Holley intake and 91 octane tune. These things riiiip when you throw money at em, let me tell you. I haven't regeared but I'm only at 32" tires and minimized extra weight so it's been fine.

It's stupid fun now merging onto the highway and passing slower traffic. Plus I'm more comfortable with its capability now that I know what the failure was @Gfenza89

Forsure, but the thing that sucks about dry sump is that I would have to sell an organ, or something. Accusump seems the most cost effective for now.

Late to the party, but this sounds almost exactly what happened to mine when it failed. No warnings, no nothing. I was driving across a bridge and I heard a pop, oil light came on, followed by screeching and grinding. Done. It would start back up...but it sounded worse and worse every time.

Ended up costing me 13k to put a used engine in it with a 3 year, unlimited mileage warranty on it.

More information regarding your specific situation would be gladly appreciated. Especially for us stock engine people. What are your oil change habits, mileage , etc. Without that info this doesn't really mean much. I could buy a new truck today and trash it for 2 months without doing any maintenance and the same thing would happen.

The last few pages all I've seen are people complaining about the stock engine and wanting and sometimes successfully adding things to improve power and then dying. I don't care at all about any of you that do that.

The engine was designed to do something and you fucked around with it, then complain it died. The FKS is not a 2JZ.

Same thing happens in the Subaru world 60% of the time. Drives me fucking nuts. I think the greatness of the 2JZ engine ruined every normal person's opinion on engines/mods/tuning etc.

If you're not happy with the output power of the stock FKS / etc then buy a fuckin Hellcat or something. 95% of us Tacoma owners are daily drivers/ normal people/ Don't care that our trucks are not race cars. If you want to go fast, this truck isn't for you. None of them are, really tbh. I'm losing my faith in humanity as every day progresses.

Just to clarify I'm not aiming most of this other than the first paragraph at you.

There are plenty of problematic stock engines on this forum. The vast majority that had something go wrong were stock, according to the owners. Of course it’s still a small percentage of overall owners, but there are enough of them here to at least feel discouraging to read. I do think keeping it stock is the best chance for success, but that doesn’t change the fact that plenty of stockers still suffer similar dreaded, well known problems that have yet to have actual confirmed fixes. The ACIS flap, the burnt valve, timing cover leak, and generic blown engines, to name the most common ones.

Yes, but something most people don't realize is that the vast majority of people that own a 3rd gen tacoma are not on this forum. In general the consensus across the board is that the FKS is a very reliable engine and from what I've seen, especially compared to most other 'modern' engine platforms, it is. I want specifics. If you're doing 10k mile oil changes for 150k that means something. Information is everything.

Idling forever on an angle means something, failures due to odd off road situation (certain angles of the vehicle so oil can't reach certain places etc) this is all important to the data.

All of those are concerning to me other than the timing cover leak. From everything I've seen it's a minor leak in the vast majority of cases and typically people freak out over any type of oil leak. I'm at around 90k miles on my 2017 and no oil leak yet but when it does happen I will probably leave it be.
