I think what happened to the OP is an anomaly and not indicative of a Toyota/Lexus engines. It unfortunate and initially I would have said have a drop-in-low-mileage used version of what came out put back in. If he can do it himself great. Drive it awhile and he's happy keep it. If not, sell it. But I only said this because I didn't think about the option you suggested @littlefish

I can't explain this market but I think under the circumstances you are right about "...sell the truck as is. Bet he comes close to breaking even".

I hope it is some stupid minor thing as well but as far as what it makes you "look like", I would keep in mind that if you do get to the bottom of this anomaly you would look like somebody doing everyone on this site a service. Thank you in advance

I have to ask the obvious...
Have you taken it apart and done a real diagnosis on it? I mean the dealer trying to sell a engine doesn't surprise me at all.
It could be something that is easily fixed and put back on the road.
Unless the dealer pulled the front cover, valve covers, and oil pan there was no real diagnosis done.

You tried the dealership, it sounds stupid but...

At least at one point in time Toyota cared and would send parts like this off to a team of engineers to take apart and analyze to see why it failed and correct the underlying issue

I really want to know what failed if you find out. I would like to hope that no damage occurred since it's a non-interference motor, but even if the timing jumped it should still crank? If it's seized, was there any play when you attempted to turn it over by hand? Maybe the chain somehow broke and is preventing the crank from rotating freely. That, or something transmission-related. I don't think that engine is toast, but I also didn't thoroughly read through every post. Good luck OP!

The fact that like 6 weeks later we are at "Something seized" and nothing further bothers me. OP said there was nothing in the oil if I remember correctly. I wonder what the dealer actually did to come to the conclusion that something seized.

More evidence countering the dealer's diagnostics. Most of the seized engines I have taken apart have had pretty large bits of what were originally rod bearings or other metallic components in the oil from loss of lubrication and contact. Was the engine ever turned over by hand? I think I saw mention of that but no follow-up.

I just don't see how an engine could withstand enough damage to seize and be unrepairable without any other indication. Perhaps hooking the truck up to Techstream can shed some light. At this point, all we have is speculation and the evidence presented so far is pointing towards some other failure.

This entire post is kind of ridiculous. I would think finding out what really is wrong first would be the way to go. 150 k on any gas motor Toyota or not is a lot of miles. There are many things that could go wrong. It’s a machine. This problem could very well be something bad or something simple. Making it seem like the 3 rd gen is junk is kind of funny after driving 150 k miles.

For $400 they should tell you exactly what seized and maybe why . My girlfriends Ford Escape they took the transmission out , took it apart , showed us all the metal in it , put it back in , new atf oil and was $300 .

Where are you from that 150k is a lot of miles? That’s 3 years for some people driving two for others. Up until this year 150k would take me 4.5 years to cover in a vehicle. I assume that any modern gas engine should be able to go 250-300k with engine oil changes only without a problem. Think of it in hours…that’s only 3500-4000 hours. That really low for a major failure.
