rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
The way I heard it was.....

If in a conversation with another person, you happen to say that "Most of these engines go for 300K miles, if oil is changed when needed", and they respond,
"But I know of a friend of a friend of a relative of mine that had their engine fail at 60K miles with a perfect record of maintenance".

Just stop talking with that person! They have no grasp of concepts outside of their own little bubble.

Walk away! They are only going to drag you down.

Have you ever owned a vehicle with any of those engines I listed? If you did, you might understand why those engines are the bees knees!

3.5 cant handle a moderate angle.Screenshot_20230826_003855_Gallery.jpg Meanwhile, you can run a 3.4 or 2/3rz totally on its side with no problem

There must be a variable in the Tacoma that is causing the failures over the others .

1- tunes ? Some bad some good ( a tune can be very dangerous to a motor )
    2- how people abuse them
    3- maintenance
4- certain off road situations (like steep hills / rock climbing )
    5 - modifications ( Superchargers)
6 - people running oil that’s not spec

Who knows what really goes into that mix of people with issues .Do you think everyone will admit they caused an issue ? Any time you mess with anything you run risks that you have to accept. I learned that along time ago racing cars and motorcycles .

I knew it....this always happens on a Friday.:frusty:....likely even happens from some changing their oil too much creating man made issues.

just a pull it out of my ass guess but i suspect one thing that may contribute to it are owners that lug these engines. i do not have a statistic but one thing that has jumped out to me are the number or posts where owners say they never or seldom shift (MT) or rev the engine above 3K RPM. they must live and only drive where its flat.

i'm not suggesting it needs to be beat like a rental car but running at 3K-5K RPM with the occasional touch of the red line shouldn't hurt and may very well do some good.

i never owned a vehicle where i felt i had to be so careful and gentle with it. a tacoma drive train should be to mid-size trucks what the honda foreman is to atv's. it should take a beating and last, and last some more, each and every time and way beyond what the competition offers.

There's nothing wrong with their statistical comprehension (for the most part). They have an agenda and sadly, many have nothing important in their lives other than trolling TW.

Mmm… an agenda definitely but from some of the comments I’d say it kinda reinforces the point that they don’t get (but don’t want to get) the actual volume of these that are out there functioning without issue. Almost as though they’re hoping that if they make enough noise Toyota will recall all their trucks and put some magic motor in them.

My Tacoma statistics: 100% of the 3rd gen Tacoma that I've owned have had engine failure at 35,000 miles. A month in the shop then traded it in at 110,000 miles (when it started leaking oil) for a 2023 4Runner. I still kinda liked the Tacoma. Buhbye.

I don’t know about tunes. I haven’t read a 3rd gen tuned engine failure (oVT, kdmax,or OTT) . It’s mostly stock. If there was, I missed it. What I read are all stock .that’s why I was thinking it has to do with frequent high rpm’s due to frequent downshifting sometimes forceful downshifting skipping a gear or 2. Think 6th to 4th or worse 6th to 3rd .

All I’m saying is some of the failures ( not all ) I’m pretty sure if things were done they are not going to admit to it
