Although initially, I think I prefer the 1GR, the 2GR-FKS on my 2018 does not seem too bad, although time will tell through abuse and durability how good it is.

I removed my plastic engine cover as I am philosophically opposed to them in general and just see it as something that will get in the way of wrenching on it down the line. I see the insulation on the bottom of the cover...is that for sound deadening only, or does it act as a temperature insulator for the manifold? Id rather do without it, but dont want to mess with engineering dynamics. Thanks!

... couldn't you just remove it when wrenching "down the line"?

The cover pulls off in a few seconds, then you can wrench on it.

Well yes of course, but its also the idea of removing shit that doesn't actually have a legitimate function.

you can. but where to stop with that? actually i don't know if there's any temp modulation from the cover, but i would seriously doubt this motor's reliability through temp control would be dependent on it. so, as you'd want to say: remove that shit.

edit: yes it's true that i have 2 cabinets full of take-offs from my Tacoma..

It has a legit function... both thermal and sound deadening. Do what you want but it takes like two seconds to remove, plus it keeps the mud splashes away too.

Start with the cover, remove carpet, doors, tailgate and all unimportant bits that have no function lol.
A few bungee cords are much lighter than the tailgate. You will solve the power complaint!

It refocuses the sound of the motor back into the block to provide more instantaneous torque, and it also improves under-hood aerodynamics for better economy. Removing it will be a noticeable performance downgrade.

It's weird to me that my 2018 Tacoma's don't have insulation under the hood. Seems like that would help reduce engine sound.

It also protects the stuff under it from water infiltration /rain /storm/big ass puddle/ but it has the #1/2 lbs weight drag on that +#4000lbs truck. and maybe you should only fill your gas tank 1/4 at most as the other amount over what you need, because it doesn't have a legitimate function beyond that day or two's commute. think or all the ware and tare you can save... ps the 6 time a year i open the hood and the plugs last 100K just what do you think you NEED to do under the cover ? once a year for me to clean under it .

I removed the one on my Jeep as the Jeep Hood is vented and I think it helps cool the engine compartment. With no vents on the Toyota hood, I’m not sure removing will do anything except maybe allow more engine noise to escape.

I've always pulled the engine covers on my trucks. It lets me look for obvious issues every time I've got the hood up. I'm lazy, so removing the cover on a regular basis isn't gonna happen. Just ditching it permanently compensates for that personality flaw.

It was the second thing I pulled off. Right after the air dam. Effects nothing.
