2JZ GTE Swap In 2007 Tacoma

Well guys, thanks for your input and links! Interesting to say the least! But I have came to the conclusion that I will go with a 2JZ. It is less of a "what is easy" concept, and more of a love for a 2jz, and love for that particular truck... Mate the two and Ill have exactly what I want! I like the 2wd version of the truck, and believe it or not, if you chose your lines right, you can get through most mud holes down here in Louisiana in that 2wd taco that fullsize 4wd trucks get stuck in! I don't want to sound cocky by any means, but money isnt a main issue, I have a full time job, and Im in part time college, and the budget to support this build. As well as a backup vehicle to get me around until it is reliable. Time is the only thing holding me back since I take frequent trips to West Texas!

I would like to have a "sleeper" type truck and be able to take it to the track. Im also not new to turning a wrench, at one point, I built a drift trike out of 1" black pipe, with a 36 HP motor and nitrous that would go 80 mph! But thats just one example! As well, I grew up building and rebuilding small block as well as big block Chevys, and the ole reliable ford 300 a few times. So im not exactly a "JDM fanboy" I just grew to like the 2jz motor!

So as for different ideas, I am set on a 2JZ GTE-VVTI inside my 2007 Tacoma. I am willing to take on the pain, struggle, and cost of making it happen. That will make it that much better whenever it is done!

Also I did make a mistake in my first post, I do have the 4.0 V6, not a 3.0

But, back to the truck!

I am planning on a ford 9" Rear end to handle the power, IRS was a a pretty far out there idea, but straight rear axle has never let anyone down!

Im looking for some build sheets on 2jz motors currently, I plan on a single turbo, if anyone has any info on that, that would be awesome if you could send a link!

Id like to do a brake and suspension upgrade all around, I'm doing more research on good ideas for that.

You may be better off with a non-vvti because of the tuning complications with vvti. However that is a well known engine, so VVTI should be managable too.

As for single vs Twin, the factory twin on a 2jz is one of the best ever. Proper Sequential twins are ALWAYS better than a single in everything except peak numbers.

As for transmissions, you are going to want to look at a GM automatic trans or similar setup, toyota transmissions other than the v160 (getrag) are not up to the task north of 600 hp.

You are going to want to 4 link, or at least ladder bar the rear for sure

Since you sound motivated to do this swap, have you heard of the 1FZ-FE? Effectively the larger 2JZ. At 4.5L. Pretty certain the transmissions bolt up the same between the engines. You'd need to double check on that.

Either way, make it happen.

I also really like the member's truck, who swapped in an S14(?) rear suspension, into his 2TR. Built it, boosted it, and drifts it.

 

The 7M is a very capable motor too, so long as you have proper machine work done and put in a metal head gasket. I love me some 7M action. (I’m an MKIII guy.)

And pay through the nose for a jellybean. I love the MKIV too, but the prices are absurd. Besides, I love pop up headlights!

Gonna call you a little crazy, but go for it if you have the cashola. I would suggest looking up “b is for build” on YouTube. He does a full series where he swaps a 2jz into a FRS. It will definitely help. Would also start a build thread In the build section of TW so we can all see the process :^)

 

Need to see some racers now, with the 3rz and 1fz!
