Not sure if it's power or torque that ultimately breaks an axle. Of course torque will be multiplied tremendously downstream of the crawl case...

Either way, torque curve will be higher from a new 30psi target boost pressure and advanced timing with water/meth. I will be avoiding getting into high boost when I have the cases in lo.

Yeah with the original setup there is some donuts and maybe a burnout in this video. We'll see how reckless I'll feel with 40" tires though...

@2JZ_Tacupra WOW, I'm always impressed with the things TW members do with their Rigs. I'm an old man, and you make me feel stupid. Please keep a running total of expenses for this build, I'd be curious to know what your final price tag is on the investments. but when you get done, 1 of a kind badasssss Tacupra. Your obviously a really smart dude, what are you, a Nasa Rocket Engineer. I'm happy when I can keep my stock 2003 running and driving okay. :D

I probably have most of the invoices and receipts for parts, but given that I sourced some used components and I don't log labor I couldn't provide anyone a useful total cost estimate. Will do my best at some point to put some numbers together, but it's pretty low on my list of priorities. Honestly it would provide me with more pain than pleasure realizing my true out of pocket cost for this project.

Wannabe NASA engineer. When I was 13 I was a finalist in the worlds largest rocketry competition called TARC. What I learned there definitely translates well to this type of work.

It is really just a matter of money right now. Saving up for coilovers and bumpstops (possibly bypass shocks too)! Those will be costly so it may take some time.

Those components are definitely an expense. Carry on man. I'll be patiently awaiting future updates!

Sweet build!! I'd heard about this swap before but never really looked into it.

I do have a question though, being as the 2j is from a sports car, how does it perform as a truck engine? I feel like truck tasks like towing, low speed grunt, and loading the bed with heavy things and hauling it hundreds of miles would hurt the 2j. I totally get the 2j is capable of like 700hp stock but that doesn't necessarily mean it has what's deseriable in a truck motor. I'm thinking like how the old GM LS engines were used in the Corvette and the Silverado. The Silverado had lower power ratings on paper but that Vortec engine with the cast iron block was rock solid being used as a truck engine. I'm not sure how a vette engine would fair towing a trailer up a steep grade. There was a reason GM engineers did what they did.

Either way I'm always stoked to see custom builds like this! Keep up the great work. Can't wait for the twin turbo 1600hp build ;)

That's a good question and it all comes down to components and configuration. The 2JZ in its stock form is a very responsive engine as Yamaha and Toyota gave it a sequential turbo system. I could have gone with much more budget friendly parts but I wanted to keep it responsive. The EFR line of borgwarner turbos are spiffy with a super low interia rotating assembly from a titanium alloy turbine wheel, ballbearing, twin scroll. All features that contribute to low lag. A quick spool valve added to this effect. Short intake plumbing to minimize the volume the turbo had to compress. A water to air intercooler to minimize pressure drop. I think you get the idea. I was building boost at 2k rpm and had full 20 psi at 3k rpm. My decision to go compound is to retain my low end torque and maintain the torque all the way to redline with the primary turbo augmenting the top end flow the small turbo turbo was incapable of doing my itself.

TLDR it has more torque at any rpm than the 5VZ. It's a great truck engine and you don't have to cherry pick data points it's just superior along the full rpm band. It's an overbuilt inline 6. More main bearings and a solid block. Only time will tell if it is up to the task.

After trails at Lonestar Toyota Jamboree.

I was about to point out that the new supra has 400 ft/lb of torque and it hits peak at 1600 rpms and pulls through till red line.

What ecu did you use? Curious because in Austin we have to pass inspection with the obd2 port being read.

No need to answer, I just read back a couple pages. Can you give me the ecu code/part # so I can verify mine?

I am traveling for work at the moment so I can't be certain. But, it was an OBDII twin turbo 6spd manual ECU. Most likely 89661-14790

Very interesting. So I guess it all comes down to the tune and turbo setup. Pretty cool! If I ever have a free $20k floating around I would definitely do the swap haha.
