I have a 2001 Tacoma Single cab thats a bit lifted i bought a while back thats been sitting at the yard. i was thinking of selling it but idk but i was thinking alot about ill just do the build i always wanted to do. i bought it without an engine originally it was a 2.7 and the front differential cv axles was taken out so now its a pre runner not a 4x4 lol but the frame is brand new so it has great potential.

What do you guys think should i do a 2jzgte swap or a nice turbo 3.4 v6. I dont like the supercharge so i wont go that route.ive been saving up for a bit so i can do a project like this

i just cant decided which power plant to go with. Im not going to go drag racing or race in general. my vision is a sweet street truck with nice paint and power.

2jzgte will be more difficult and most likely require more time and expense. How are you with electronics?

I hope to own a GTE eventually.. I have a 2JZ-GE in a manual lexus and it loves to rev. Frickin' awesome motor.

The problem with the 2jz is the fitment in the truck. It was a huge pain. Everything goes together a lot better with a factory V6. On the regular cabs the motor mounts are forward I believe and you will have to move them back on the frame itself. You might want to consider a 1uz V8 swap over a 2jz.

Definitely turbo 3.4 we need more of these and they have great potential. Follow mine and @Empty_Lord threads, we are both building 3.4 turbos and trying to push some high power with them. We'll see how it goes, and would be cool to see you do a build too

im working on mine... about the same pace as a turtle. but im working on it. supercharged to start, but twin charging is the goal.. if you want to do a 3.4 it will fit better in the truck, but the cost to build one is quite a bit higher than a 2jz. But if you factor making a 3.4 fit vs a 2jz fit cost would likely be close to one another.

Personally op i would look into turboing the 2.7. they take well to boost and can make pretty good power. converting to 4x4 is also not a huge hassle on these trucks if theyre prerunners.

If you don’t like wiring, then an engine swap isn’t for you.

It’s all wiring. ALL Wiring. The plug-n-play harnesses only do so much, you still need to merge the Tacoma body harness plus A/C, radio, lighting, SRS, Evap, etc.

5vz isnt as bad. donor truck and swap all the harnesses over.
typically the interior harness is the same for all engines (but can be different for options!). just would be engine harness and ecu. plus a new gauge cluster.

Still a relative amount of wiring. If you don’t like wiring it won’t be fun.

I’m gonna say no, you’ll at least need to repin the body features of the ECU since the connectors are different.

you have to check the diagrams. repin might be needed. but going from my tundra and my taco. the harnesses inside the trucks are similar if not the same to the same year trucks with other engines.
