Give or take a couple MPH, this is my usual rpm’s when cruising on the interstate. Is it not too much? Is something wrong with my engine? Or is this perfectly normal.

I drive an MT and though I know the gearing is different, I honestly don’t understand it much.

i have 265/75 E rated tires, are they the culprit? I don’t remember what my stock tires got at 60mph

That's where I am at 60 rpm wise. I am NOT cruising on the interstate at that speed though! Someone's gonna hit you hard from behind. The manual is geared lower than the automatic models. Actually puts the engine in a happier place at highway speeds. 75 mph is about 2500 rpm. Use it!

Seems about the right rpm for that speed. I don't think you'd have to worry about your tires slowing you down too much for their current size maybe If they were bigger like 33's or 35's, and if you had additional weight on your truck. Then that's when you would maybe start questioning the rpms and start thinking about regearing.

Study this chart a bit, it might help give you a better understanding about the gearing.

I doubt it. Guy who asks this question will have no use for this chart. I.e., understand this chart, and you wouldn’t ask the question.

Stock tires are smaller which means your RPM would have been higher. It’s just simple math

Yep. I’m around the same with 265/75/16s.

I would love a longer/wider spaced 5th and 6th gear. They are too close imo. I would rather have to downshift to pass in hurry than be at 2500 at 75.

So what you are telling me is that you basically have to go 35s with a manual?? Lol

Everyone has to start at the beginning, admitting that you don't understand something and asking a question is the first step to start learning.

For those of us who may know some answers it then becomes our responsibility to teach and encourage.

With the automatic trans, its 1600 at 60 mph, so with the axle ratio the manual has, 2k sounds normal.

Are you satisfied with your fuel economy though? The overall gearing is nearly perfect for this truck. AT folks plopping in 5.29s are getting the very same 2k at 60.

Of note, our Mazda 3 6AT turns about the same revs as the Taco in top gear. Our long gone Volvo 5MT used to turn 3k at 70mph.

And then you’ll be lugging the engine. This ain’t a high torque V8. Don’t be scared of RPMs.

Just sayin', but I cruise in 6th at 35 quite a lot. Pulls gentle grades smoothly and will accelerate.

I don’t even know why this must be said but here it goes: engine load at 35mph is much less than freeway speeds.

Edit: and you can think of engine load as torque demand

It doesn't as it is obvious, but the Taco is just fine in the range that I noted.

LOL at "happier place" is that a technical term?

My Auto 3.5 most efficient cruise is around 1600 rpm (60 mph) and the best acceleration seems to occurs around 5000 rpm so I'm not real sure about your happier place comment.

I know what this thread is about and replying to your assertion that 6th at 35 is not good.

And, oops! I read the quote that you replied to as 35mph not 35s. Sorry!

So my biggest question was if this type of employee was good for the engine. I know it’s ok to rev it and it won’t brake. But this puts it in a different light. I usually do 70. But I noticed that at 60 it’s at 2K. I thought it was supposed to be lower.
I see, thanks. I’ll be doing 33s at some point. I was just wondering if this rpm was normal for my configuration.
I’ve seen it but I honestly don’t get it. But I’ll save it and look into it. I’m sure I’ll grasp it eventually.
So smaller tires = over 2K at 60 MPH? Interesting, I thought smaller tires would equal lower rpms

yeah I think the 6th gear isn’t “tall” enough. But mostly my issue is reverse. It’s too damn fast! If that makes sense.

    Good point.
Ahhh. So I imagine guys on 5.29 would be even higher rpms at 60MPH.

“Satisfied” is a very flexible word. I would say I am satisfied for backroad driving. Being also that I’m lifted and it’s a heavy ish truck.

For the highway? At 70+MPH I got 17-18. I feel that’s underwhelming but not a deal breaker of course. I still love this truck and it’s plenty fast on the highway with the MT.

I'm barely lifted, with a Softopper, and some weight. I get the same MPGs at those speeds. Overall, I'm just shy of 20 so far.

The Taco is brick in the wind.
