Any word on getting into one of these for a '21? I assume all of the computer and electronics changed after the refresh in 2015.. I apologize if this has already been discussed. I'm just trying not to miss out on the chance to keep my clutch happy.

As the person who first did 2lo in the 3rd gen, I can say this one is 3 times as elegant in its engineering and application. Why 3 times 'better'?

    Operationally:
The 3rd gen solution requires that you do a relatively careful sequence using the added 2-lo switch and the dash 4wd dial. Mess it up and you get a 4wd mode change error. (shut down vehicle and restart to clear, although it will be retained in ECU memory and is visible in techstream). It is a bit difficult to get the sequence right, until you do it a few times.

This 2nd gen solution utilizes either an added switch or the dash 4wd dial (your choice). It is a much more robust solution in its sensitivity to the proper sequence. Although it does require learning a sequence to use, even if it is a bit simpler.

    Physically:
The 3rd gen solution is simply a relay, a resistor (and connectors to make it plug and play). It requires the operator to be the brains to get the sequence. It literally has $100 in connectors, relay, and ALOT of small crimped wires... ok maybe not $100 in parts and contract labor because there is some profit in there, but it is alot of small crimped terminals.

This 2nd gen solution has much more of the logic built into the box, rather than the operator. As a result, the hardware is more expensive. It also provides a nice option to control without an added switch using the dash dial. That is the solution I used.

It is quite possible that you could source connectors and figure out a way to make a 3rd gen type solution work on the 2nd gen. Possibly somebody has done that work and posted it on tacomaworld. I really dont know, because when I needed one for my 2nd gen daily driver that I added to the fleet, I bought the solution that I know works.

    So:
My 2nd gen I bought this wonderful product. (and I would have used it on my 3rd gen if it would have worked)
My 3rd gen I did the first (known) electrical 2lo mod by hacking into my own truck harness. (and I would have used it on my 3rd gen if it would have worked). Really the biggest reason we have a cheaper 3rd gen solution right now is because I am not good enough to engineer this type of solution.

@BigWhiteTRD thank you, very well thought out.

There are quite a few reasons. Biggest one being the parts cost to build theses is higher than the sell price of the 3rd gen 2lo harness so would be selling at a loss if matching that price. Building as just a harness for the 2nd gen is not possible due to the mating connectors not being available in a connector to wire form, only a connector to PCB. Otherwise I would have designed a more simplistic version similar to the 3rd gen offering.

Other things such as high initial development costs, sourcing exclusively quality components, higher shipping costs (Canada not known for it's cheap shipping and the cost is delivered to your door), packaging orders, putting a ton of money in upfront to order in all these supplies etc .... the list goes on and on. All of these things play a role in the final price. It's a very high quality product and the price point reflects.

I also feel that the 3rd gen harness is underpriced IMO. I believe quality products should fetch a good prices. People always have the option of going the DIY route with the trade off being lesser cost and more of their own time spent. The module was created so that anyone can install (no electrical knowledge needed), be 100% plug and play, does not have you hacking any of your wiring apart and can be installed in a matter of minutes.
