I'm still pretty new to all this, and I've got a few questions. I come from the land of Jeep, where a lot of the TJ (97-06) guys hate the JK (07-current) guys, and the YJ (87-95) guys hate the TJ guys and on and on and on. There is some weird thing with Jeep enthusiasts that older is better. I once even had an old man (while I was complimenting him on his beautiful CJ) tell me his is what a real Jeep looks like, and my JK is pretty much a joke. Rude.

Does that hostility exist with Toyota guys? Do you guys think 2nd and 3rd gen Tacomas are whack, or is there any dislike of 4runners and Tundras? This might all seem random, but I'm just curious what the vibe is. So far, it's been much more communal than I expected.

I own a first gen but I would like to one day get into a 2nd gen tacoma or 4th gen 4runner. Kinda worried about all the issues with the 3rd gen tacoma at the moment. I think that attitude of hating on another person because they drive something different than you is dumb. I don't see it going on here much and when it does I think it is often in jest.

I don't care what others drive, but I am happy with both my first and second gen tacomas, and who knows maybe some day I might end up in a 4runner.

I believe most just enjoy/want the product that has been dependable for them or those they have known. I enjoy the 2nd gen and know it has many +/- over my previous 1st Gen... Different not better. I also grew up around FJ monkey wrenching and Toyota trucks pre Tacoma with broken odo @ 315k and still kicking.

The third gen has a identify crisis in the US. Why else put a car engine 3.5l 2GR in a "truck" and leave the known/proven 4.0l 1GR in all your other trucks? (Ex: 4runner, Hilux) 3.5l is a market test IMHO and they will change back or introduce the D-4D finally.

For me I like to joke around about 1st gens being better. When someone posts in the 1st gen forum about 2nd or 3rd gen stuff I like to tell them to get the hell out or something. However, when serious I chose my 1st gen because it's smaller and suits my needs better. 2nd and 3rd gens are fine. Jeeps are fine too.

Dodge Dakota...no...nope...not fine a tall. NO sir. Friends don't let friends drive Dakotas (back to kidding around)

I like the 2nd gens a lot, the third gen looks good to me but the drivetrain is a turd so I cannot get behind it. But I know there's good and bad about everything and will happily wheel with anyone.

I like my 2nd gen reg cab. If it was 4x4 I wouldn't have a first gen, although I'm stoked on my new truck since parts are cheaper and easier to come by. Plus it's easier to modify. Both gens are great - the third is just a second with a face lift and a drive train change.

I haven't found this to be a Toyota thing. I'm a perfect example, I don't even have a Tacoma, I have a 4runner but I hang around here as my 3rd gen 4runner shares the same engine platform as 1st gen tacoma.

I personally have zero issues with any make, model, type of vehicle, etc. BUT it seems like there is a cult-like hostility from *some* (emphasis on some here, not all) Jeep owners towards other vehicles, especially us Toyota guys. I don't know whether its because of our IFS, that we don't wave at each other, or that our trucks don't break every time we start them up (sorry, had to). I've heard of stories locally where some Jeep owners freaked out because non-Jeeps showed up for a trail run, claiming they weren't capable of doing the trail because of IFS. Funny enough, that same guy got stuck and the Tacoma on the run blew past him. Yeehaw!

If my 01 ever peeters out I will probably look in to. 2nd gen Tacoma or newer 4 runner. I'm not biased toward any yota as long as it's close to the reliability of my 01 DC!! I was eating at my grandmas last week thinking about Toyota and reliability. I looked in the yard and we had 2 first gen tacomas, 2 new Highlander's, 1 86 Toyota truck, a tundra, a Camry, and an Avalon. My family has been hooked on Toyota for years and I plan to continue with them as long as they stay reliable "3gen Tacoma could be another story".

If I could have 2nd gen body (12-15) with 3rd gen interior and 1st 4wd system (manual transfer case and manual hubs) I would be in heaven

Edit: 2nd gen drive train also

I think the 3rd gen front end is just downright ugly.

Ugly might not be the adjective I would use, but it always makes me think of whale sharks.

I don't knock people for owning 2nd or 3rd gens. I wish Toyota hadn't abandon the compact pickup. The 2nd and 3rd gens don't seem that much smaller than my '06 Tundra.

The one thing I absolutely like about the late model Tacomas can be summed up in this photo.

"A Concord man suffered non-life threatening injures after his pickup truck crashed head-on into a Mack truck on Route 106 in Belmont on Friday morning." See Article
