So I can't see any reason this would be an issue, but I'm wondering what the largest tire I can run would be. I saw some people were running 255/85/16 and I really like that size. The 2nd gen steel wheels should fit on the 3rd gen no problem right? Both are 6 lug.

These would be my "winter set" so I don't have to run my TRD Sport alloys in all the salt and slush. I had gotten a spare set of steelies for my '14 that I will be keeping to use on the '17, and the tires I have will last through this coming winter if I am lucky. I am trying to plan ahead here.

I do little to no off road other than the occasional dirt or gravel road for work so an aggressive or mud tire isn't required.

265/75/r16 is the largest size you can fit. The 255/85/r16 will fit, but it's skinnier and slightly taller.

Thank you, skinny isn't really a problem since it will be mainly a snow tire. I'm assuming fitment recommendations haven't changed from 2nd to 3rd gen then? I was looking for the wheel specs and couldn't locate the dimensions of the steel wheels to compare.

They should fit just fine as long as it's a 16" wheel. You may have to run a 1.25" spacer to clear the UCA, but that's about it.

I would rather not run any spacers and just want the largest I can reasonably fit without rubbing or trimming anything.

Has anyone actually done this? Use 2nd gen 16"ers on 3rd gen?

I'm eyeing up a set of 16" OEM rims from a 2010 Taco for my 2017 Sport. But it doesn't look like there's a lot of clearance with my brake calipers and the current 17"ers to accommodate a smaller wheel.

The 2017 still comes with steel wheels on the SR5. There is +5mm offset on the gen 2 wheels compared to the gen3. That would be bad for clearance if you want to run wider tires, but I'm looking for narrower taller tires so it may not be a problem.

    2017 alloy wheels - 7.5" x 17" x 30 offset
    tires - 265/65/17

    2017 steel wheels - 7 x 16" x 25 offset
    tires - 265/70/16

    2014 steel wheels - 7" x 16" x 30 offset
    tires - 265/70/16

Yeah, wider wouldn't be a concern for me either as the 16"ers would be for winters (maybe 245).

But my concern would be front brake calipers clearance. It already looks pretty tight with my 17"ers already.

I know what you are saying, but the '17 already comes with 16" steel wheels in some trim levels. To my knowledge the brake setup is identical across all trims. I haven't seen the 3rd gen steel wheels in person, but I would imagine they aren't much different than the 2nd gen.
