I'm hoping somebody has dug into the automatic 2wd transmission on the second gen before me here.

Eventually I want to do a manual swap, but for the time being it will have to stay automatic. Does anybody have a ballpark on how much power they can handle before the danger zone? Beyond that, has anybody increased line pressure/stronger bands/different torque converter?

My truck has the 4 speed automatic, which leads me to hope the missing fifth gear means it has thicker/stronger internals.

I don't know if your generation still has a kick down cable going to the transmission or if it's all electronic, but if it does, make a bracket to hold the cable at max line pressure. I used a few zip ties for awhile before I made the bracket.20191203_192501.jpg
Kick down cable mod and large B&M cooler are the only mods on my boosted 5vz. Works great so far. I just dont let it shift at max power.

Hey there the a340 is holding great at 17psi. My truck goes 7.7 in the 1/8 mile and shifts perfectly on the street. I used the TransGo kit on "hot rod" and it's barely noticeable during the daily drive. I also my factory converter restall to get a higher flash and brake stall speed. I've beat on 3 different a340s and have never had one fail. They are great transmissions. There are some truly fast supras out there still running the a340.

I'm going to be keeping my build a bit more mild than 17psi, probably closer to 7-8 ish for the time being. The truck is just shy of 250k so I'm trying to do what I can to keep the trans working reliably.

You running the stock internals? And 3rz right or could you get the 4spd auto behind the 5vz as well? Im not too familiar with first gens. Seems like most tacos are a good platform for boost of some sort though

5vz stock internals, a340 4 speed. I'd argue the 1st gen is better platform because of lighter weight, and the 5vz is like in the top 10 engines ever built. No F/I experience with the 3rz
