I have a 06 2.7 4x4 Reg Cab and I want about 30-40 more horsepower. I don’t want to supercharge or turbocharge anything due to it prob blowing up. My rig weighs in at 4850, and the 2.7 is struggling to haul itself with it being regeared to 4.88 and being on 33s. I’m stuck on tire size because of this, I can’t tow a damn thing and I still get 17-19mpg. Has anyone done a 3.4 Swap? I think it would be perfect. I like the idea of a 4.7 V8 as well but I’m pretty sure my trans and diffs aren’t rated to handle more than around 250HP. I’ve seen a couple YTers that have done the 5.3 LS Swap but none of them really go over it well.

2nd gens came with the much better 4.0, that would be the engine you'd want to swap. Kidna weird to put a 1st gen 3.4 in a 2nd gen IMO.

Unless you're looking for a project, the best course of action would be to sell it and buy a 4.0. It will never be just like factory if you DIY, and it would cost you less in the long run.

Also a turbo on a 2.7 is nothing to be afraid of if you are committed to keeping this truck. Easy to install and they run awesome

My engine is turbocharged and has 290k miles. No reliability issues here. it would be way less work to turbo the current engine and it will outperform an n/a 3.4 or 4.0 even on low boost (5-10lbs)

Nice! Are you on the stock ECU still? I had a 5 lug 2.4 running 5 psi on the stock ECU and it still ran great. Man, I miss that little truck!

I’m using a MAPECU3 to dial things in but have a Haltech elite 1500 waiting to install. Man, that does look like a fun little truck! The little 4 cylinders are super responsive to a little boost. Wakes them right up

That you do sir. Totally changes the way the truck drives on the hwy for the better. I’m on stock gears and 34s and I can still cruise 5th gear and keep it in vacuum

Id have to get some custom tune to make my auto work right. What HP you seeing and rough cost? I know very little about engines but im very mechanically inclined otherwise lol. So im sure i could figure it out.

Do you have a thread that helps to show your build?

There are also shift kits in the 2TR-FE performance thread for your A340F that could help. The 2TR is a super simple little engine, you can definitely figure it out!

I’ve never had my truck on the dyno, but I bet it’s making around 300/300 at the wheels based on how my sc’d v6 feels. I bet I’m in it around 5 or 6k but I did all of the work myself except for the turbo manifold, which @Torspd built. I also didn’t go cheap on the turbo, so that alone was around 3k or a bit less. I also started with a URD sc kit so that saved me a bit of time and money too

Here you go. Feel free to pop in there and ask any questions you may have

That would look pretty odd putting a 3.4. But its your build, i say go for it!
