Like the title states, adding aftermarket component speakers and keeping stock head unit and wiring.
I know the stock tweeter and woofer are wired in parallel with the wires first going to the tweeter. What's the correct way to wire this? Do I splice the four wires at the tweeter and then send that to my crossover?

    What haven’t I changed?
Did your speakers come with a crossover? Are you using an amp?

I installed a “bass blocker” with the new stand alone tweeter. Also installed a new 2 way speaker with external xover. That way I didn’t have to mess with the wiring (kept it as it was) and kept the stock head unit.

    These are the speakers.

Come with a crossover so I'm thinking I send full signal to crossover and split to woofer/tweeter.
I don't mind cutting and splicing in the door. Just wanted to keep stock wiring from stock HU to door.

There are Toyota adapters so you do not have to cut wires. There are also adapters to fit round aftermarket speakers in the Toyota Tacoma nonstandard oval speaker holes.

You should be able to just unplug the stock tweeter. Replace stock tweeter with new tweeter. Replace stock 6x7 woofer/midrange with new speaker. Use new electric wire adapter from woofer plug to xover. Run new wire, (low frequency to woofer, high frequency to tweeter), from xover to speaker and tweeter respectively.

Also unless the new speakers are highly efficient (~95 db), doubt you will be happy with the available volume provided by the stock headunit.

They're spec'd at 93db. Figured I'd try it and if I don't like it, I'll add one of those tiny (class C?) amps like the alpine one.

I was under the impression that if you just unplugged the tweeter, the woofer wouldn't work. You have to connect the wires at the tweeter. I think I understand, just didn't want to screw it up.

Also, where is the best place to mount the crossovers so they don't interfere with the door panel?

I wrapped the xover in foam and wire tied it just above the woofer.

OK, try using the tweeter out. I’m using both outputs for a 2 way and external tweeter.

    93db should do it.

    Answered some of my questions...
If you unplug the tweeter, woofer does indeed go out too. Cut back the wire sheathing. I believe all that needs to happen is connection of the like colored wires, then I can use woofer wiring to send to xover.

I have the wrong speaker adapters anyway so have to wait for the right ones as I don't feel like making my own. Might be room next to woofer after it's adapted to 6.5" or thinking maybe below and behind door handle.

As proof of concept, I tried unplugging stock woofer and plugging in new one.
    15629696057707186678319162463374.jpg

Obviously new woofer is getting the full signal like this and it sounds like it's struggling with the high frequencies but there wasn't really a depreciable loss of volume so I'm optimistic about running these without an amp. We'll see.
I also didn't mention that I put this little bugger in some time ago and it provides plenty of bass for my tastes.

Yes. For now for sure. Don't really understand rear speakers honestly. Music is recorded in only 2 channels. Screw the rear passengers

Looks like this might could work....

I'm changing out the front speakers like you are, adding JL Audio 6x9 components. The wiring harness at the stock tweeter has the radio signal harness and another harness that drops down to the main speaker. Since I am installing a component set, I removed the short harness that runs from the tweeter to the main speaker along with cutting the radio signal harness off the tweeter. Next I'll extend the radio signal harness and run it down to the main speaker. The included crossover will then be installed between the main speaker and the tweeter. Next, I'm adding JL Audio 5x7" coaxials to the rear doors (I have a 2013 Access cab). Installing an amp under the drivers seat and building a sub box that goes between the rear "mini" seats with a JL 8" sub. Installing Dyna Mat in the doors and back panel as well.

Some strange part of me wants to leave the wiring harness so it could easily be returned to stock. I'm not sure why though... my truck is far from stock, I plan on driving it in to the ground, and much better than stock speakers can be had for cheap.
Your way is probably the cleanest, best way to do it, just have to dig in to the harness a bit to make sure you (I?) get the correct 2 wires of the 4 at the tweeter.

Curious what made you go with 6x9 components over rounds?

I learned a long time ago that transferring upgrades from one vehicle to another is pretty much a waste of time since usually there is newer upgrades available at that point. I went for 6x9's since they have a more bass volume. I'm one of those guys that likes a lot of base. The speaker wire to cut out is easy to find. Just follow the wires from the tweeter to the main door harness where they are all taped together. Cut the tape or unwrap it and you'll see 2 of them heading off to the front of the door and 2 of them going down to the main speaker (which I removed).

Check out *********. They have a speakerkit for just your application. It’s literally a plug and play no need to deal with crossovers , did I wire it correctly. Mount and plug into factory harness. They just only deal with Toyota’s.
