I got my HPTuners / MVI2+ setup working last night. Who do I reach out to to discuss & price out options & logistics for remote-assisted tuning for my 2014 V6 6spd MT 4x4 TRD OR? I'm located in northern California.

I will be the slow guy in the thread today. In Brief what is tuning your engine involve?
Have a hard time reading the charts on this cell phone with these old eyes… does just removing the charcoal filter benefit the 4 L engine?

    You're most welcome!

Tuning these trucks requires one of two software packages (HPTuners or VF Tuner), each requiring different hardware. Or simply visiting someone with the tools to perform the reflashing of your OE ECU. We have a network of folks across the country that can get you taken care of. You can find them here:

    https://overlandtailor.com/remote-tuning
    https://toyotatuningnetwork.com/locations

I did not specifically dyno the effect of removing the secondary air filter alone as the truck was not my own and I didn't want to make any modifications we did not have consent to perform. However, with that said, given the findings and results from the test, I do not think there would be any appreciable gains to be made with the OE primary filter still in place. The OE filter is (as you can see from the results) a bit restrictive to have the truck pick up power by removing the secondary filter.

I would also like to add, that I believe with a better flowing primary filter (preferably something dry! Not oiled!) fitted in the OE airbox I believe you could potentially see some gains from removing the secondary air filter. I do not believe you'd see anywhere near the gains that I was able to observe removing the primary filter though. So the gains, if present, would be likely <5hp at peak RPM.

Did I miss you specifically mentioning approx. how many HP gain is to be had from upgrading an OTT7-tuned 2nd 4.0L gen primary air filter to a larger / freer-flowing dry filter? I reviewed this thread & didn't see a specific number mentioned. If it's significant I will probably make that mod. Do you have recommendations for a specific make/model of aftermarket primary air intake/filter upgrade for the 1GR-FE?

    Thanks

Send us the full exhaust and intake you’d like tested and I’ll provide you with the dyno results. We’ll cover the return shipping of the parts.

Sorry I’ve missed your message, I didn't get notified or I missed it.. Either way

I specifically dyno'd the stock airbox with the tune, with and without primary air filter. I think you'd see at least 3/4 of the gains from a quality highflow dry filter such as the aFe. I have not specifically tested that filter, but I'm reasonably certain you'd see a gain. It won't light the tires up, but if strapped to the rollers it would register clear improvement just as simply removing the filter did (with no other changes).

I think it's important to realize that these trucks wont gain huge power on single modifications (forced induction aside). It's the small, incremental gains that are had as you improve efficiency and pumping losses with each mod that things start to have a cumulative effect and really stand out over stock.

I'd really like to accumulate a pile-o-parts to do individual testing and then show the net sum of all the parts over stock. I think it would surprise many.. But we've got a 3G Tacoma Supercharger tune to develop...

    Randy,

We’ve done them with over 200k.

We always recommend (regardless of vehicle age/mileage) that you ensure the vehicle is in a good state of health before tuning. Ensuring you’ve performed the basics such as: Running quality fuel, regular oil changes w/ quality oil, quality (NGK/Denso) plugs of the appropriate heat range, coolant and other fluids topped off and serviced at recommended intervals will go a long way towards ensuring the tuning process is enjoyable.

If your truck is in good running order, you will absolutely transform the driving experience with a tune. We’ve tuned close to 600 2nd Gen trucks to date, I can assure you, you will not be disappointed.

We've gotten a fair number of PM's and emails lately about folks asking about 2G tuning availability. It should be noted that OTT is able to tune any 2G Tacoma V6 calibration, regardless of transmission type. We have support available for all supercharger kits currently on the market and can do custom turbo kits as well.

Feel free to contact us directly if you're setup with VFTuner or HPTuners via email at: info@overlandtailor.com

Otherwise, our network of tuners will be more than happy to take care of your needs: https://overlandtailor.com/remote-tuning

Anything for M/T rev hang and is the tune detectable during a smog test?

The 2nd Gen manuals are the only vehicles that have the proper maps defined to delete/reduce the rev hang. We can do anything from a full delete to scaling it back a defined percentage.

It calibrations do not alter the Calibration ID, so it’s not going to be flagged.

    You now have my attention.
I have fought the urge to mod this thing (don’t tinker with the daily) but eliminating the rev hang alone makes me want to do this.
