Alright everyone this is my first post on here. It’s official I’m part of the Tacomaworld;) alrighty I first want to say this isn’t a tutorial or how-to, it’s more or less an experiment. I’m hoping by doing this I can gain knowledge while also providing it.
    So let’s dive right in!

I’ll say this, for owning a my first Toyota I’ve been impressed with everything nonetheless however when it comes to Off-roading I look for full use of all the equipment/ mechanical features this truck provides... besides the fact you can only lock the diff in 4lo. This makes total sense coming from a factory standpoint. However I see more use in the rear diff than just in 4lo... AND IM NOT TALKING ABOUT DOING DONUTS FOR GOD SAKE. My biggest concern is running the 4lo too often and wearing it out.-like snow running conditions.
So here is my noobie version of the “Mod” https://youtu.be/ox9MVAKoWJ8

Nice video op ! Do you think running the lock in 4 hi will cause the e-lock to overheat? Seems like it was designed for low speed , short term operation .

No that won’t happen, Toyota only lets you engage it in 4 lo for safety. You can run it locked however fast you want to.

If it ends up going bad, I can always look at getting an air locker. I figured why spend $$ when I could use the perfectly working stock locker!

I also don’t plan on going over 15-18 mph with it locked as I do want to get as much use with it.

Nothing wrong with wanting to do the anytime locker mod. However, wearing out 4LO by using it too much is not a thing and should not be a concern. Your truck isn't that fragile and 4LO is not a wear item.

Not how this works either. Speed will not overheat the locker or its parts. Run it for as fast and as long as you like. It works just fine for high speed, long term operation.

So your just grounding out the yellow and black wire? Great video but couldn't you just skip the switch and go straight to ground? I'm thinking about doing it someone in the near this weekend ?

I'm going to strongly second this post.

This is not new territory, people have already implemented and extensively tested anytime-locker mods for 2nd gens.

This thread contains over 400 posts over a period of (9) NINE YEARS and probably has a lot of useful, relevant info to consider before jumping in & cutting / splicing wires on your vehicle.

not sure what mod you’re looking at but you don’t have to ground anything here for the mod. Just wire a relay in place of the 4x4 ECM controls.

In the video above it looks to me like he is grounding that wire with just a switch in between.

I did just check that video and it’s not the right way to do it. A DPDT relay is all that’s needed and your locker controls are independent of any 4wd or 4lo signals.

Too bad. I was hoping to not have to cut any wires and use any relay. So basically the “locker anytime mod” is the correct way. That’s what you’re saying?

So I'm the OP on the locker anytime mod for dummies. I think what this mod does is fool the truck into thinking its in 4 Lo and that lets you engage the locker. It's been 9 years since I researched my post, so my recollection is a bit fuzzy. But, I kind of remember not going down the fooling the truck road because it didn't feel right. I'm not a person that says because I did something it is the best way. (actually it makes me happy when someone shows me a better way to do things) If someone wanted to go for the fooling mod I'd love to see the outcome. It is certainly a simpler, non permanent mod.

If you do go down the fooling mod path here is a link to the best wiring diagram I've seen. I'd want to understand what's going on before I started poking wires into the truck.
