Anyone know of an exhaust system for a 2nd Gen Tacoma that will help me with performance? I'm looking for a little boost in power for towing? If this topic is already addressed can you point me to the link?

    LOL....

Sorry had to do it. Everyone here will tell there is no gain by a cat back alone and I was skeptical. I just installed a TRD exhaust and I had no perceived improvement of anything ie: hp, trq, or throttle response. If you want sound then by all means get an exhaust but these tacomas get an annoying drone very easily depending on the exhaust system you go with, if you have shell/cap, and/or other engine mods.

I'm not looking for sound modification of any type, too old for that lol. Just increased performance. Thanks for your reply.

If you want increased performance then save your pennies and go talk to @JustDSM and purchase HPTuners.

Best bang for you buck mod you will ever do to your truck in NA form AND it will be cheaper than any "catback bolt on performance exhaust system."

If you want true power and increased performance then get a Magnuson Supercharger AND go HPTuners.

on a side note, the stock exhaust is mandrel bent and the muffler is a straight thru design. Although, I don't recall if the stock piping is 2.25" or 2.5". Most aftermarket exhausts are 2.5" or 3". Cam gears from @mightytacoman and software tuning w HPTuner @JustDSM seem to be the two best mods reported for power. I have the cam gears but I have not installed them yet and I haven't tried the HPtuner so I'm not speaking from personal experience.

Edit: I measured the stock pipe OD to 61mm and the TRD OD to 64mm, so assuming wall thickness is the same there is only +3mm in ID diameter.

Long tube headers with the stock y-pipe and cat-back are a great way to actually increase performance while not increasing sound.

Pair that with a tune and cam-gears and you'll have a truck that is worlds better performing than stock without the associated noise.

There you have it buddy. This should be more than enough information to get you down the right road. It may not be what you hoped for, but this is what it's going to take to make power on our 2nd gens.

Didn't say if 2.7 or 4.0. I have a 2.7 & as much as I need it, I haven't found anything, near reasonable, to help. You can find air intakes, exhausts, & programs, but from what I've read you will feel little or no difference. Pedal commanders are pretty popular & have plenty of both pos. & neg. responses. From what I read they make your Taco "feel" like it has more power by reducing the throttle lag caused by the electronically operated (fly by wire) throttle. Turbo chargers or super chargers can't be mentioned without hitting the lottery. My Taco 2.7, 4x4, auto., 4.10 gears runs appx. 1700 rpm @ 60 mph. That's way too low. Expensive, but if I could change to a 4.56 or possibly 4.88 gear it would run maybe 2300 rpm @ 60 mph. My Taco feels waaay stronger at 2300 rpm. than at 1700 rpm. & think I would be a lot happier. Lately been seeing advertisements for new "Ford" & "Dodge" Pick-ups with 700+ HP new from the dealer. That should satisfy any of us. Except for the payments.

Thank you that is great info! Saves me from dumping money into an exhaust that doesn't solve the issue I'm trying too deal with.

Long tubes are of your choice. If you live in CA, long tubes are SUPER illegal, anywhere else, Doug Thorley or JBA makes long tubes. URD makes them as well, but be prepared for some pretty garbage customer service. It's hit or miss actually. Regardless of who you decide, make sure you get a quality set. You don't want to go back in there later replacing them because they were built using inferior metals. Needless to say, a quality set of longtubes can cost you thousands of dollars. Also, due to the nature of their construction, they will move your effective powerband to the top end of the RPM range and you will lose power down low.

As for HPTuners you can do Amazon, eBay, or my personal favorite, Hinson motorsports. You can also go direct to HPTuners. I do not recommend Amazon if you live in California because those idiots restrict the sale of the MPVI2 module to all other states but California.

    Hope this helps.

Definitely helps! I'm in Utah so no inspections. Thanks again. Any modifications needed to install the headers?

I think your biggest limitation for towing is going to be your brakes...

2nd gen v6s make 236HP. Buy a truck with a v8 if you want more power towing. You are are just going to spend a LOT of money on performance mods for very little payoff.

    NOT worth it.

For more power add a supercharger.

Actually to the wheels is 186-191 HP. The 236 HP rating is at the flywheel.

    Get a full-sized pickup with a 5.0+L V-8 equipped for towing.

The Tacoma is not a strong tow vehicle.

I had a '04 GMC Sierra 2500HD with the 6.0L. That truck could pull, sucked at fuel mileage, but it could manage a heavy load. I hauled 35 square of asphalt shingles in a single load......it squatted a little. Even 3600 lbs of landscape rock made it squat a little, but the ride was like a Caddy with plenty of pull left over.

The Tacoma begins to grunt when the cargo capacity gets close. NO WAY would I consider pushing the Tacoma to 2x capacity.

Whatever you spend on "power mods" could reap a benefit, not sure if the cost/gain ratio is good.

I’m trying to be generous here.

Fords smallest ecoboost engine in the F-150 (2.7TT V6) makes 325/400.

Hell the 2021 Ranger makes 270/310 and MUCH more with a tune.

It’s not even close. It’s embarrassing really, but “muh Toyota” is a wicked mistress to breakup with.
