Lots of Arkansas pinstripes, mostly on the roof. New tailgate from putting a front end loader bucket through it. 31.65” shoes.
    Hello all,

I have been researching on this site for a few years. Thank you all for the invaluable information. I bought my Taco new in 2007. I’m too cheap for replacing perfectly good parts, so now that my suspension is shot, I’ll start my build.

The first thing I changed, quite a few years back, was going from stock 30.6” tires to the “largest without a lift” 31.65” tires. I noticed the difference immediately, the loss of low end torque was huge. Now I want a lift, and 33”, but I know I would be extremely disappointed without new gearing.

Looking through here, and YouTube I found some wildly contradictory info, so I did the math myself. I hate to type, and I loathe spreadsheets, but the results were very interesting to me, and I could not find them consolidated anywhere else.

Hope others find this useful, and if someone would check my work I would appreciate it. I’ve screwed up before and will screw up again. Bottom line is the autos and manuals are very different beasts. Looks like autos need to put in 4.88 gears on stock 30.6” tires to get the performance of a stock manual. Manual should not go above 4.56 if they wish to hit highway speeds, and autos should not go below 5.13 if they want any torque. Just my opinion though.

    Laters,
    GOB

Nice site would have saved me a bit of time. Suppose my main point is if you have a manual trans advice from automatic trans people is not applicable.

yes the gearing is significantly different where it’s like apples and oranges comparing. That’s why when anyone has a question on regear the first question I always ask is if auto or manual.

Heck of ancient build. Any O sensor issues with the long tube install?

Thanks. I'm running the rear O2 sensor simulators and haven't had any CEL related to O2 sensors since the install almost 10 years ago.
