Hello all! I'm looking for a head unit that would be a upgrade from the stock unit in a 2011 taco. I'd like something that can display google maps or other apps for navigation. Any tips or recommendations that won't break the bank? It will be a DIY install. Thanks!

I went with a Pioneer MHV2400NEX in my 2006 a few years ago. I've been happy with it and would recommend.

Any pioneer with android auto or apple carplay. Don't bother with actual nav headunits unless you need it for no-cell-tower traveling.

Expect around 400-500$ for a cheap pioneer, and 1000$ for a GPS unit that doesn't use cell towers.

Like everyone is saying, CarPlay and Android Auto are your best bets. A lot of nice units out there with varying levels of features.

Probably cheaper to get a Garmin if you’re looking for something that isn’t dependent on cell service.

I went the route of a standalone Garmin for $100. In my case though I need portability in case my wife needs to use the unit. My last one lasted me 10 years so it's cheaper than a new radio.

I run a single DIN Pioneer CD player I paid about $150 for, so even both combined are cheaper than a head unit for both. I also use the CD player a lot so if it goes in 2-3 years it's not a shock to me and then it's cheaper to buy a new one.

I bought some Sony touch screen HU for like $250. It has flawless Apple Carplay and is a great experience. I'm no audiophile and the sound environment in a Taco is pretty lousy anyway, so that said it's better audio than stock and I'm perfectly happy with it. Buy though Crutchfiled and get all the necessary steering wheel control adapters, trim pieces, wire harness, etc. It's a no brainer install.

update: it was the Sony XAV-AX1000 that I bought.

I suggest buying through Crutchfield.com as well. I have bought several things from them over many years and service is top notch.
I went with Sony XAV-AX5500. It's been a good one so far. Doesn't play CD but I don't care. Android auto and CarPlay or whatever they call it. That way your navigation stays up to date as well.

    Stock, 4WD, Access Cab, White,
Kenwood makes a couple of nice HU with GPS, Apple, Android capabilities. They are near $600 from Crutchfield.

DNX576S plays CD/DVD and has all the goodies you want. There is another model w/o the CD/DVD player, cost is about the same.
