Had mine for awhile, and it’s a huge upgrade over what I had. Also no longer need my Joying steering wheel controls. Sadly this is my 2nd unit, after my truck got broken into, and the 1st one was stolen (like that was a profitable theft…..).

I removed those annoying stickers on the sun visor.
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how these head units hold up in the cold? It gets down to about -30°C here (-22°F), with a few days reaching -35°C (-31°F).

@Okkine 2.0 I've got a similar unit (Xtrons brand) in my 05 Accord for about 8 months and another similar unit in my 2002 Park Ave for almost 5 years and neither has been bothered by the few subzero days we get here in southern NY.

If money is not an issue, would you still go the joying route?

For the new newest 9" (w/Android 12) with a volume nob

    2014 toyota tacoma w/ JBL

    volume controls
connect canin+canout in the back of the JOYING head unit

    configuration
go to setting-system-factory(8888)-Change model and choose as below, after choosing, pls remember to click save button and then reboot the head unit

    backup camera
connect the yellow rear camera pin coming from the connected Joying harness (there will be another yellow rear camera pin but it comes from an unconnected harness)

set your reversing camera system in display>reverse settings to CVBS N

So far it's plug and play, have to mess with EQ a bit but initial impressions are it's capable of better sound than stock

I finally bit the bullet, and ordered my new 11.5 inch head unit. After some minor modifications to the factory bracket (filed down the alignment nubs, and drilled one new hole in each, after CAREFULLY measuring), I finally got it installed the other day.

I wasn't sure if I'd like the look, since its much bigger than the factory screen, but it actually fits in nicely with the dashboard.

I absolutely do not miss that warning screen that I've been cursing for the past year, nor do I miss having to go through a labyrinth of menus to turn off the screen for night driving.

The sound quality is better than factory (even at the default settings), and while I thought I would miss the physical volume knob, the new gestures feature makes it a non-issue.

The only problem I'm currently having is that I can't seem to reprogram the steering wheel controls. It says to press and hold the button for 3 seconds, however that does nothing.

The steering wheel controls DO work exactly as they did with the factory unit, I'd just like to rotate them 90°, so that the volume controls are up and down, instead of left and right.

I noticed that the vehicle defaults to a 2018 Camry, so I'm not sure if that's the problem. I don't see any Tacoma in the vehicle list.

If anyone knows a solution to the steering wheel controls, I'd appreciate the insight!

Edit: One other thought. During installation, there were two connectors that were the same shape, size, and number of pins, however the grooves ensured they only fit into their proper location. The harness from joying didn't have those grooves, so they both fit in both connectors. With a 50/50 chance at getting it right, I just took a guess at where to put them. I'm assuming that I'd be seeing more problems if I got it wrong. Does anybody know for sure which one goes where?

I would, the joying does everything I want it to, but honestly that’s mostly Apple CarPlay

For me, it wasn't about money, it was about functionality. I hated the factory head unit, and I couldn't find a mainstream brand that works how I want.

Android allows more flexibility to set it up how you want it to function, but it takes a lot of time to customize it.

If you want something that just works straight out of the box, go with an established brand. If you don't mind taking a lot of time to customize it (it'll likely take me months) go with Joying.

Granted, I've only had mine installed for 4 days, so I can't speak to the longterm quality, but that is a chance I was willing to take to get something that works the way I want, instead of something generic. The price was a secondary benefit for me, but if the established brands were willing to offer an android head unit, I would have gladly paid double for something that I could be more confident would last long-term.

So I think I'm ready to take the plunge and getting a Joying head unit. I like the idea of the versatility is gives while maintaining the volume knob. With that being said, is there "best" (price and customer support ng best) place to purchase from? Amazon? Ebay? Direct website? Also are there any essential or highly encouraged accessories that ought to go with it?

I purchased mine off Ebay over three years ago. From what I know customer service is the same regardless of where you buy it. An email to Joying (in China) and due to the time difference they'll reply within 24 hours. When I first purchased my unit I emailed them a few times and they always responed. There are also a couple of forums that might give some insight on the operating / trouble shooting an Android head units.

As for accessories, I added their backup camera (mounted inside of my Leer cap) to check up on my dirt bikes when trailering them. A simple flip of a toggle switch and it pops right up on the screen. Joying also has a front facing camera for those who like that option. Since I already had the Scan Gauge 2, I opted out of the OBD2 reader. All those gauges do look pretty cool when displayed on the screen though.

Can thr joying cameras act as a "dash cam" and record incidents?

Also is it a clean swap out for the oem back up camera with the Joying back up camera?

To my knowledge there is no "dashcam" recording functionality on JOYING units.

There might be some Android app(s) out there that could possibly be "hacked" to emulate such functionality but that would be pointless in an era where you can get a $65 reconditioned dedicated VIOFO A119 V3 dash cam on Amazon, which still has excellent specs & video quality, even in 2024.

The VIOFO (or any other good-quality dedicated dashcam) is going to perform 100x more reliably than some kind of JOYING/Android kludge.

When I was inquiring about the Joying backup camera on this thread there was some discussion about the Joying dash cam and recording. If you go back to pages 64, 65 or so, you'll see the posts. At the time I was more interested in getting their backup camera so I really didn't absorb the posts on dashcams and recording.

Here's a link to a Joying dash cam that works with their head unit.

Interesting. I didn't realize JOYING designed & manufactured a separate dash-cam add-on unit for their head units.

I wonder how it performs compared to market-leader stand-alone dashcams like VIOFO etc etc.

In order to watch videos while driving, not that I would, can you ground the parking brake wire to ground to bypass that with this unit?
