What did this comment even mean?

Read a comment in a thread yesterday that the general consensus is that "second gens aren't considered Yota's".

Anyone care to elaborate? I've never heard that before.

It is probably the die-hard Hilux and Gen 1 enthusiasts who say this. They are kind of right, they are two different body sizes (gen 1 vs gen II).

The good thing about the internet is that it gives everyone a voice. The bad thing about the internet is that it gives everyone a voice.
Pay no mind to troll posts. The 2nd gen was successful generation of Tacoma. Honestly the 3rd gen seems to have the most short-comings when looking it in context with the time period it was released.

Not to hijack my own thread, but what are the most obvious? These two guys at my dealership hound me everytime I go in for parts to trade mine in for a 3rd gen, guaranteeing my payments will be the same.

Back to topic. I didn't think there was much merit to that comment but I know that my 91 ranger is really a Mazda. Didn't want to believe it was the same situation but had to make sure.

I will likely get lambasted by a 3rd gen owner if they read this but here is my take (which I think is the same consensus for sizable percentage of people who have tested or owned the gen 3):

The gen 3 was kind of a rushed refresh and not really an all new Tacoma. The engine is parts bin Lexus motor put in cars and it really offers a lethargic and slow driving experience. While it has more HP (and slightly less torque), the 3.5 has to revved out really hard to get those numbers. In contrast with my 4.0 which I can keep under 2300 RPM all day, the gen 3 feels dead until 3,000 RPM or so. Really making a lousy driving experience.
The new transmission has been plagued with issues, TSB's and many shipped with VERY low fluid. I understand Toyota's hands are tied by the EPA but I think in context with other trucks from 2016, the gen 3 Tacoma falls short in many respects.
Honestly the gen 2 Tacoma still competes very well against the gen 3. MPG isn't even that much better with the gen 3.
I know a 3rd gen person will probably want to argue me, but just scroll through the first 3 pages of the gen 3 forum and see all the issues it has.

By that twisted logic, the Hilux and Gen1 are not real Yotas either since Yota got its fame from the pickups from the 70s, not from those Johnny come latelys.
