I have been running Dakar leafs with the upper overload removed. The Dakars have been on the truck for 200k miles and the upper overload has been removed for 50k miles.

After an off road trip this past weekend that involved a good deal of articulation and also a lot of miles of hard running that used full suspension travel and a bit of desert mud, I found indications that the spring clamp that retains the spring pack to the lower overload had been in contact with the frame on both drivers and passenger side during full bump. The mud made it easy to see the indications of contact. On the passenger side, it had also contacted the Icon 2.5" remote reservoir body leaving a dent that will require a rebuild with a new reservoir body.

If the upper overload had been in place, I believe the contact could not have occurred. I plan to straighten out the spring clamps, cut off 0.5" or so from the top and drill lower holes for the retainer bolt. I believe this will address the interference. I wish I had made this modification when the Dakars were installed.

Thought this information might be useful to others running without the upper overload on Dakars.

Would extending the rear bump stops help ?

Yes, but at the expense of up-travel. I think it is better to cut off the top of the clamp a length equivalent to the thickness of the missing upper overload. That would remove interference issues and not limit up-travel of the rear suspension.

just a thought though, maybe the spring clamp making contact is what prevented your shock from bottoming out. with that clamp shortened it may allow damage to the shock next time

Maybe, but I doubt it. The spring clamp is very light construction and IMHO would just deform in any contact without carrying any appreciable load. The shock still has a rubber bumper on the lower end (hidden buried in mud) that is 0.25" or so tall, so there is still additional travel available.

The interference here seems to result from the clamp being closer to the top of the spring pack by removing the upper overload which was 0.5" or so thick. I think the contact here (resulting from VERY hard driving over rough terrain) occurs only in the last 0.25" or so of up-travel travel.

Real men just call it camping
I've noticed evidence of small impacts on both sides of mine as well. Same locations on the frame but not bad like yours. I still have all the leaves installed including both overloads. At some point I plan to add some Timbren bump stops to stop it from happening in the future.

    Icon 2.5 adjustable coil-overs w/ OME Dakars w/ AAL

"+" on driver side and "0" on passenger side.

Constant weight of ~200lbs in back with All-Pro bumper, bed mat, RotoPax, Hi-Lift, and misc gear.

    Hub to Fender
    FD 22 6/8 - FP 23
    RD 24 5/8 - RP 25

    Ground to Fender
    FD 38 - FP 38
    RD 40 1/8 - RP 40 1/2

Now I'm wondering if my Icon rear shocks are long enough and if the OME U-bolt Kit was long enough?

    (Just installed today.)

I would say that's probably what they would yield with that much weight on them .. As far as the shocks .. I'm not good at calculating the lengths

I am getting ready to work on the suspension on a 2016 3rd Gen, icluding install of Dakar leafs. To avoid the spring retainer clamp issues I showed that can occur at full bump when the upper overload is removed, I decided to modify the Dakars for the 2016 where I also am removing the upper overload.

To start with I cut off the excess length of the spring clamp attached to the overload. I cut the clamp right at the lower edge of the existing bolt hole.

I then drilled new bolt holes

and reshaped the cut off upper edge and reinstalled bolt.

a little paint on the bare metal and the Dakar pack will be ready for install.

Also, just put the top overload back in and took out the third leaf yesterday, will run around for another week before I post measurements.
