    Hey Guys,

I accidentally cut into the shaft when cutting the inner bearing lace. Do you think this shaft is still useable? Should I be concerned with vibration or possibly future cracks? 20220811_124809.jpg

You are 100% good to go.

That surface does not need to be perfect. The seal rides on the retainer, not the shaft.

Source: I have done hundreds of axle bearings.

Yeah definitely it will seal up just fine. My concerned will be vibration and possibly bearing failure. Have you ever installed one like this? I'd really hate to install this only for it to fall apart 20k miles later if thats what will happen. At the same time, I would really not like to spend 400 bucks on a new shaft.

I've knicked many, it has no effect. The inner race will press on just fine.

I had one journeyman that used to like intentionally scoring them to prevent the bearing from spinning. (where there term spun bearing comes from).

Don't fret, its fine. Plus once the bearing is on you'll never see it again lol.

Dropping the axle is far worse. They can potentially warp from a bad drop.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I will continue to install. Hopefully I won't knick the other side.
