Everyone can debate about this all day long but IMO in the end we are going to be in the same boat as the 1st gen tacomas. Just like they keep doing with the rear leaf TSB being extended to the current year tacomas the same thing is going to happen with us with the rust recall from the 1st gens.

Traded my 99 Dakota sport 4WD V8 for my 09 Tacoma. The Dak had 138,000 miles with nothing more than brake pads/shoes and tires. The truck had no body rust and very little undercarriage rust in upstate NY. Was a great truck. My 09 has rust starting already. We'll see.

I think you have that backwards. The 3 leaf is softer than the TSB 4 leaf. I would consider the ride of the 3 leaf to be Caddy-like as the 4 leaf is definitely firmer. Unless you're talking about a CTS-V, of course...

Yup. It is crappy that they rust like they do, but in the end I will take one heck of a "trade-in" towards a new one.

Understood. I agree, which is why I've fought with Toyota over the TSB to no avail.

His frame looks good, the leaf springs are solid steel so that kind of surface rust shouldn't bother them. Wouldn't hurt to get a can of spray paint and touch up some areas. The 1st generation frames rusted from the inside out so you should really be looking on the inside of your frame (if that's possible with your boxed frame). Some speculate that's why Toyota switched to a C frame design for the 2nd generations.

Has anyone done any research on this? i haven't seen one URL to a reputable news source saying there's been a recall? i've googled and even looked at toyota's recall site (http://www.toyota.com/recall), at it has mentioned NOTHING about this recall.
everyone take a deep breath, i think we're okay (for now at least).

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
The truth is they going have to make recall on 2gen trucks since frames in North East rusting much faster then 1 gen trucks. There is something wrong with their painting process. Welds are the key points which definitely will weaken structure. I made call to Toyota corp. They got my info on the books.
However they had no solution with exception spraying with undercoating which is useless. I painted my frame with primer containing rust inhibitors and then enamel paint also containing rust inhibitors. So I don't expect places that got painted by me to rust in another 20 -25 years. I painted as much I could and will make another pass with even more paint this year. Plus I am thinking I will paint underneath the cab as well.

P.S. When toyota asked me what I want them to do I told them to remove the frame and let me clean/paint it with real paint then put everything together. They said NO :(

I wonder if some of these rusting issues result from state/local governments using magnesium chloride instead of calcium chloride-based deicers. This is usually what is sprayed out onto the road before a storm and the switch happened in the early 2000s. The MgCl stuff is definitely worse for concrete. This is likely affecting the metal differently. Couple that with lower-quality steel & some of the harsher (to the environment) steel coatings and it = lots of oxidation, aka rust. This does not even factor in the local environments that are just conducive to rusting (e.g. near the coast). Not sure there's an easy fix unless the steel is coated better or just higher quality..

Sorry about the truck man but you said you bought it used so who knows what the truck has been through. Did you do any research on the history of the truck ? That rusting does not look normal and it is not just the frame alone that is rusting away. Does it have a clean title ? I hope it wasn't salvaged from some disaster like Hurricane Katrina. BTW I'm not defending Toyota on this one, just want to get the facts straight.

I disagree. People need to keep on top of toyota. If newer trucks are rusting this fast something is wrong!

If people would leave Toyota alone, we wouldn't have all the TSB'S. They are a company, all they care about is a profit.

I love how so many people will defend Toyota on any issue, real or imagined, as if they had some sort of vested interest in the company. I'd be willing to bet that 5 years from now most of them will be driving something else, defending whatever that something else is, and talking shit about all the problems their Toyota did or didn't have.

We all love our trucks (well most of us), but if there's problems then they need to be brought out into the open and dealt with. It's cool to be brand loyal or whatever, but don't let it blind you.
