And changing the topic, and dismissing everything that might not show total loyalty to some random manufacturer. +1rep to you

i stopped at the local dealer by me the other day and said i hear rumors about a frame recall on the 2nd gen tacomas. the service writer i spoke with said that nothing is official yet, however... this particular dealership said once they get county approval and you are in their system, you will be called to come in and drop your truck off. they will keep your truck for three days and give you a rental car. while your truck is there, they will completely prep your frame, spray some chemical to seal any existing rust and block any further elements from penetrating(she said the chemical is very toxic that's why they need county approval) and then they will undercoat your frame. all free of charge. also, she did state that if the frame on the truck does look to be deficient in any way, they will bring a toyota rep in to inspect it. they are no longer doing buy backs, so toyota will just then replace your frame for free.

Toyotas over the last few years DO have a rusting problem. I believe its the cheap metal they are using. My mom's old '04 landcruiser had rust all over the engine bay after 1 winter. I had a 2001 qx4 that I drove through 4 winters and it was spotless.

ive had my 09 for almost exactly one year, and the rear axle is coated in a heavy layer of rust. i wash the truck twice a week in the winter to get the salt off. this rust is a major gripe for me, im going to have to grind it down and repaint the thing myself, none of the other 5 vehicles (domestic and import) i owned have rusted like this. other than this rust problem (and the wet noodle leaf springs:rolleyes:) the truck has been great. i look forward to driving it into the ground over the next 10-15 years.

Replace the frame? This seems crazy to me as they would have to do a complete tear down of the truck and rebuild. Since the dealers suck at anything half the time I wouldn't have any confidence in them being able to do this or that this would be cost effective. Their labor cost would be insane on this.

They have been doing this for awhile now on the 1GENs. There are a few here on TW who actually have had it done and can attest to it.
My local dealer has a dedicated service area & techs just for doing frame swaps. It is a money maker for them (the dealer) because they are so good at it.
They have it down to the point where I think they are going out and finding trucks wholesale, doing the swap, then selling them on their used certified lot.

To see it in progress is pretty cool and I would have done it on my old toyota truck if it was an option. Rusting toyota trucks has happened since the early 80s. Its use to be the bed seams, never saw a 80s truck without the bed rotted off.

    Yep.

I even bought a whole new bed from Toyota to put on my 87' and that started rusting at the seam within 3 years.

Pissed me off, big time, after having spent the cash on the new bed.

I just noticed today after washing my truck that the rear bumper is really starting to rust. I am not happy, to say the least. I also noticed a couple of spots on the passenger door. Little craters right through the clear coat. This is 100% unacceptable. The truck is 6 months old and has 3500 miles on it! It's been ONE winter!

It's a great little truck, but the rust and the non-reclining, solid bench seat are really making me start to think that maybe the Colorado would have been a better choice.

I really hope they've got a long term fix for this.

AWWHH SHUCKS. Quit trashing Toyota, this isn't a real issue, no wait, this rust must be due to a lack of maintenance. Aw rust is normal after a few months.
There, now I can be like the above moronic Toyota defending sheeple.
Sorry to hear about your rust though, it is pathetic.

Just Reporting on my rust. I can't believe how many rust spots are begining under my taco! It's only been on the road for 16months and I live in the desert. It looks like what I might expect to see on a 5or6 year old taco.

Nothing is compromising any strength or function under the truck, but seeing oxidization start on a new truck is a bit unnerving.

So far nothing official, but IMO it is only a matter of time especially with the world of hurt Toyota is in with their rep.

Yup, no way no how would I trust my can't even get the rear leaf TSB done right the first time dealer to do this. Back to the factory sure no problem. Dealer NO!

Seriously a Chevy. The Colorado is a cheap copy of the Tacoma.

After reading this Thread, I returned my new Tacoma to the dealer and made sure they undercoated the frame tip to tail as well they undercoated the inside of the rear bumper. We will see if that helps.
I took a good look at the jobe they did and the work looks very complete. It appears they did not miss anything.
Before they did the work, I stopped at a car wash and cleaned the underside of the truck as much as I could. It had 300kms (<200 miles) on the truck when this was done.
    Hopefully this will help.

I agree warrenw. I am not a person that says buy the dealer undercoat, but this appears to be the exception that proves the rule. Undercoat might do the trick here.
