My 2012 Tacoma has a starting problem. After it runs and sits for 2-4 hours, I will go in and start it, and it would hesitate when starting. But when it starts, it runs and drives fine. Someone told me it could be the oxygen sensor failing, but I haven't changed it out yet, since it has 4 sensors alike.

Has any one else have this problem?

Sounds like fuel pressure bleeding off... Had a 1999 S10 4 banger where the fuel pressure regulator was starting to shit the bed that was bleeding down fuel pressure, would do the same thing.

It doesn’t sound like it would be fuel pressure. In the mornings, it starts fine. It only hard starts when it’s hot out, above 85 or so.

I would post what it sounds like, but the extension is not acceptable.

    Actually, it does.

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and leave it there to see if the pressure is bleeding off over time. That will be your ticket to ruling fuel pressure as a problem or not.

When you say it hesitates, is it not even cranking? Is it an extended crank time before it runs on its own?

It cranks and runs after about 6 to 7 seconds. It starts and runs fine when I get in first thing in the morning. If I get in 4 hours after it has been running, it hesitates, but does start. I am looking to see if someone I know has a fuel pressure gauge, so it may be a few days.

An EVAP purge on hot start up causing rich A/F ratio is common when fuel is topped up to max when refueling.
When the pump click off STOP. Do not try to pump more fuel in tank.

I called Toyota and they gave me pricing and how long it will take to do it, but they also told me to try a fuel additive. I will try that to see if it clears up a little.

I did try to call a few other places, and they were not very helpful.

Well the good thing about oxygen sensors is that they have a value and can be diagnosed easily. Any codes or mil's? Does it smell of gas during hard starts?

These types of problems can be really hard to track down, but I think the suggestion to do a fuel pressure bleed off test would be a good place to start. If you had a leaking injector (to the intake), it could cause loss of pressure and flood the offending cylinder. At least there is a way to rule it out.

It wouldn't hurt to clean the MAF. If you use a K & N filter especially. A bad MAF has been reported to cause long cranking starts.
