New here because I have nowhere else to go and I know you guys can be savage if a thread is repeated, if its out there point me in the direction. Searching the web for days and calling around with no exact answer. I have a 2004 Tacoma,4wd,no E Locker. I recently had some noises coming from my rear end and want to pull it to rebuild but I still need something to keep me going. A buddy has a full rear axle out of a 2005 with E Locker, So my question is as long as the ratio matches (or keep it in 2 wd while I do my rebuild) will a TV6 out of an 05 directly bolt up to a 8.4" out of an 04? Full axle swap, brakes everything?

No. Find an 8.4” third on car-part or at a local junkyard if you want quick and easy. You can grind and redrill your housing to accept the 8” elocker third though

Elocker axle is completely different from the non elocker axle.

05+ axle has different mounting points for pretty much everything that connects to the truck.

No, 8.4 uses a different mounting pattern vs the elocker. (E-lockers have a notch taken out of the housing to clear the locker motor.) Also, if your thinking about swaping the whole rear axle, 2nd gens (2005) are about 2.5ish" wider on either side vs 1st gen tacoma. So 60"wms vs 65" wms.

Yeah I was just talking about full axle swap, I knew the thirds weren’t compatible. Thanks for the simple “yes or no anwser”. Can’t find any Salvage yards in Indiana with Tacoma’s and CL is pretty dry. If anyone’s in the Midwest I have cash in hand!

Would be interesting to have someone measure it but I know for sure the 2nd gen tacoma's are wider. Might not need spacers if you plan to widen your stance..

But while you're doing the work on your 04 axle, I think it would be easier just plan for a full weekend at home. Get everything together and start tearing into it friday night. I did that when I did my timing belt: started on Friday night, and had it all back together by Sunday night, ready for work the next day.
