A little off topic, anyone know if I can fit 2 tires 265/70/17 laying both down flat in a 6’ bed 3rd Gen?

Looking it’s 63” total so I’m guessing yes

The term "Topper, Canopy and Cap" all describe the same thing depending on region. Tomato Tamato Tomater. Hell, I've even heard it called a Lid.

I was confused too when I joined the forum and someone said Topper. I have always called it a Cap.

The actual composite part is the same size. The additional height is mounted above the existing size composite bed.

Much like the front end, the hood and fenders sit much higher than the 2005-2015, but the structure underneath is all the same size, they just have some risers to meet with the new fender height and a plastic cover over the gap. The grille mounting tabs are also really huge to meet where the smaller fender apron is.

It’s like looking at a really well done Ferrari-bodied Fiero.

Bump. Would a bed rack from a 2nd Generation Tacoma work on a 3rd Generation Tacoma? I understand the bed is 1" taller but is the distance from the top of the bed to the bed rail the same or not?

It's not. The 1" was added above the rail.

Once during a TW Express run, one of the people that was there had a 2nd Gen. We got to talking about caps and he had a cap for sale I wanted. I measured and compared our beds right there. His was a good inch wider and less contoured. There's no way the cap would have fit properly. The tailgate was different too but that wouldn't matter to you.

So I would think depending on the type of bed rack, you could run into some trouble. It might not work at all if it's an all welded design that has an L shaped bed cap rail. If it's just a flat style then it might. It will just be wider than your bed side caps, and not match up to the contour as much. If it's a modular then it might have some adjustment, and you might have to just drill new holes in the gussets or the places they bolt up.

Overall, the length is not going to be that critical.

    Hi Jeff,
I saw you posting in another thread. I'm Rob. What is your background with Tacoma's? You seem to have some actual knowledge. I just want to learn more about you. Not being an ass at all.

Interesting question. I've never owned a Tacoma, but I am somewhat of a Toyota enthusiast and also worked at a Toyota dealer for 11 years before starting a mechanical engineering degree in 2016. I recently started working part time at another Toyota dealer while I go to school.

As for how I got involved here on Tacomaworld, back in 2015 I posted some information on Wikipedia about the new truck that I had gotten from Toyota stating that the truck was going to have the 7GR engine, but shortly after that I found that it was going to have the 2GR-FKS instead, and after posting that updated information people kept telling me I was wrong and referencing my original post. It was actually pretty hilarious (also it turns out that the commerical-grade 2GR-FKS and 7GR-FKS are the same engine so there's that). Then I sort of got into a few discussions about whether or not the 3rd generation Tacoma is actually a new generation (it isn't) or a mid-model update (it is).

Every group/forum/etc., for every vehicle type tends to have some trends (I'm active in various Toyota and Lexus groups due to my various interests, etc.). I don't want people to take this the wrong way, but one of the trends I've noticed in the Toyota truck forums is that there tends to be a lot of people who post information that is either not completely correct, totally incorrect, or guessing about things. Same stuff happens in all groups of course, but increases with the amount of modifications that people do to their vehicles I think. If I have the correct information, I like to provide it.

It actually ended up being a perfect fit aside from the bed rails sitting an inch higher on the 3rd gen. Just had to make some brackets to extend the mounting hardware. A shell/cap is a whole different story though.

Ahh, yea, most definitely if you ask a half a million people a question the likelihood of getting a half a million different answers is inevitable. It doesn't have to be on a forum. I try to limit my answer to only what know to be fact. It just sounded like some of your posts were "matter of fact" like. Not that means what you are saying isn't credible.

Like the bedsides. I would never state that they were different widths unless I had measured them myself. I have some engineering background myself. That's why I said if the bed rack in question had a Bed Cap design with a L shaped plate, I should have said if that L drops down into the bed that it would be an issue. Cause you ain't squeezing 10 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag.

Yeah, the problem is that on a forum it sticks around and people keep linking to it or referencing it for years to come as opposed to something someone heard some time, haha. I don't generally post unless I know the answer or I looked it up right before I posted. Now and then I've been known to get something wrong, but if that happens I will usually be the first person to admit and correct the mistake.

I'd like to throw a question into the ring. This is my next purchase if the answer is yes. For purposes of an Overland Rack, expressly the Fab Fours overland rack, are the beds identical enough for that to be interchangeable. I have seen other racks claim 05-20 but this one specifically says 16-20. This is the bed I need for my build. I want to be sure it would fit before I do it.
From the things im seeing, it seems like it totally would.

Anyone try an ARE Aluminum cap from a Gen 2 with barn doors on a Gen 3?
I have a lead on one, but its a little bit of a drive. If you've tried it, I would appreciate your opinion.
    TIA

    Good morning Josh,
Just curious, what are "barn doors" on a cap? Do you mean an aluminium contractors cap with doors you have to remove the tailgate to use?

Also, we have a lot of people over here that close to you that might have some leads on a cap.............

Yes, contractor with two rear opening doors that replace the tailgate.
    Thanks for the links.
