hey guy's I have a 06 prerunner currently and love it. I'm gonna be selling it to my girlfriends younger brother who has been drooling over my truck for a while now. Looking to upgrade to a 17 TRD sport 4x4. Just wanted to know what everyone thought about the 3rd generations, issues you have notices, upgrades you like, the whole 9 yards. I know what I getting in terms of reliability and re-sell value just wanna here from you guys.
    Thanks!

    you are kidding right?

edit: sounds mean, but literally just look through the 3rd gen forums and take a test drive. I love mine though!

Do a search as this has been discussed literally hundreds of times.

There are many who will tell you to keep your 2nd gen as the 3rd does not have the same level of reliability.

There are those who will swear by the 3rd gen and that it was the best upgrade they have ever done.

Do a google search for 2016 Tacoma problems and spend time reading (many of the 2016 issues have not been addressed in the 2017)

Best advice I can give to you is take a new one for a minimum of an overnight test drive.

There will be no clear answers here :D which is why I recommended a web search.

This site has an abnormally high number of "White Knights" who will rush to the defense of the Tacoma regardless of the problem and immediately brand anyone with an issue as a troll.

Get opinions from here, but not ONLY from here.

Why do you want a sport 4x4? I wish i had gone with the Offroad 4x4 in hindsight ! Also would have gone with the Manual Tranny instead of the Automatic!! I say this because the Offroad capabilities of the Offroad 4x4 like having the rear locker for one and crawl control. I got all wrapped up in the looks of the hood scoop which you can always get later. I am sure you have heard of all the Automatics having issues which i did experienced and have had the updates done and have helped. I love my Truck now, i have done a ton of upgrades to make it even better, thanks to Tacoma World the Mods keep coming! I recommend you test drive the shit out of both models and know what you want out of your truck both on and offroad! Good luck both Models are GREAT!

This would be the easy answer if Toyota offered more MT configurations. I guess part of it is CAFE standards, but I'm getting better mileage rowing my own 2nd gen 4.0 OR than people are reporting on here for their 3rd gen A/T

Test drive the GM twins too. Guys here aren't fans, but there are several people on the twins forums that have traded their tacos for a twin. The new ZR2 has a bump on the hood too, if that's what you are after.

    Plus diesel.

You can always put a deposit on a manual on allocation (coming into a dealer)

Is this for tacos? The build sheets I have seen say they don't even make an Access Cab offroad with an M/T. If these creatures exist through some dealer allocation, I would be all over that.

    One word - Consumer Reports....actually that's 2 words.

Read the reliability rating on the 2016 Taco's. Hovering around Yugo levels now.

'upgrade' can be debated. And if you are going 4x4, consider the OR over the Sport.

Or not. Seems there are more bad apples in the bunch than there have been in the past.

I agree with the others who mention overnight test, minimum 100 miles, up hills, passing, etc. In the actual vehicle you would be buying. Not one 'just like it', as the salesman will say.

The only disclaimer I have to offer is I'll freely admit I'm not an owner of a 3rd gen.

Have never considered it, only because I don't want one. Not because of the bad news here, but other reasons, most of which are just personal tastes in a vehicle and vehicle pricing.

Therefore the advice to make sure you know what you are getting by dealing with the specific vehicle.

And if you have a way (not via a salesman!) to validate the quality of dealer service in your area, that would be good too. Because if you do need help over warranty and TSB issues, you want to have a skilled and friendly team backing you up.

Agree on this. Get a Manuel Trans. Most of the 3rd Gen issues I hear are the shitty auto tranny.

Honestly man the 4 cylinders are the same as the 2nd gens, just better updated on some things.

The v6 version is new though, people are worried, this tacoma has sold more than any other tacoma ever so naturally their will be more unhappy people considering more people own them...

I bet in 10 years when these 3rd gens start cracking 200,000-300,000 people will move on to the next gen to complain about "Dont buy a 4th gen, get a 3rd gen" it happens with nearly EVERY single vehicle.

And like smitty said get a manual.
