So I have been debating on getting the 3rd generation. I sold my 06 trd sport a few years back to cut some bills. Now that I got a great job, I can afford it again. I'm interested in the trd sport double cab. I guess my question is, 3rd generation over 2nd? Who has upgraded there 2nd Gen to a 3rd, and did they make the right move? I am new to this site, but it seems to be where I can get some good info on this.

I traded my '06 TRD Sport on a '16, TRD Sport, Premium with upgrade pkg...all the bells and whistles..!!

Love the new truck...old was fantastic...New has more electronic shit to F-up, like my BSM system...but that's minor crap.

After I get the Tranny filled and the grease zerks all greased and the diffs checked/filled, transfer case checked/filled, I think I can get down to waxing it and enjoying it a lot more....

    The '16 is a nice truck..:canada:

Just traded my 09 TRD Offroad few weeks back for a 2016. If budget is not a problem is no a brainier, you can build your 3rd gen. and done deal.
Just to give you my point of view 2016 ride is awesome, fuel consumption way better, more options and packages, again you get more standard features on 2016 models.
On the other hand, the Gen 2 Tacoma's feels beefier and rides more like a truck and you might get a loaded 2015 for a good deal.
    Ill pick the 2016.
Disclaimer: due to the excitement of owning a brand new Tacoma I might be somehow bias at this point .
    Good Luck

The one thing I didn't care about my 2nd, was the interior. Outside looked fantastic, but inside was just so plain

Well, 3rd Gen. I traded my '11 in for it and haven't looked back. If you posted this in the 2nd Gen you'd have everyone tell you the 2nd Gen was better most likely.

There should be a master list created of all the problems reported for the 3rd gen, so inquiries like this one can be easily informed.

But for now, just go through the 3rd gen section threads, and probably 30% of the threads are reported problems.

Haven't heard too many people say they regretted it, but I do think there is a thread where someone asked the same question. I never really read any responses though, but there may be some users who you can speak too in there that may regret the switch.

simply put....both. Never owned a 2nd gen but drove one. They are two entirely different trucks.

Nope. Traded my 2011 TRD Sport 4x4. Zero regrets, the new one
    is nicer in every way.

Agreed. I liked both and both had their separate perks. I just happen to like my '16 more.

Can't beat technology nowadays, something that 2nd gen Tacoma lacks.

A good question to ask yourself is about your needs. Do you need a 'truck', or do you need a plush ride with a truck bed?

That said, neither Tacoma is the best 'truck'. However, as you point out, the 3gen seems more plush. Doesn't mean it's not as capable, just fancier. And bigger. And more expensive.

Personally I don't try to use my utility vehicle as a high tech plush road ride. So I don't care about that stuff. And for my purposes, I don't need bigger. My bed is the same size, and it hauls what I need to haul (kayaks, bikes, home stuff) just fine. And it is capable on the road if I need it to be; it's just not my #1 choice.

Plus, I'm not a 'debt' guy, regardless of the job and 'afford it'. I'd rather have less vehicle and no debt. Keeps me from having to ditch stuff when the financial things take twists and turns.

Only you can decide what you need a vehicle to do, and what you're willing to pay for that service.

Enjoy the comparisons and shopping experience!

I'd own both if I could afford it :)
