    Hello all

I recently sold my 4runner and I’m in the market for a 2gen Tacoma. Before I jump in head first I would like to ask the veterans here what are the weaknesses on the 2gen.

    frame is a given
Is lbj also affecting the 2gen?

Help a brother out, thank you

    Frame rust.

    Leaf springs.

    After that you're good.

I'll add that the radiator mounts can be a weak spot if you wheel it hard enough. But hell everything can be an issue if you really send it.

These are tough and capable trucks, there really aren't many (if any) weak spots if you take care of it. Buy with confidence.

Front end up to the cab firewall is basically made of plastic, not metal. Frame, leaf springs, and body mounts (predominantly the radiator core support mounts). All years AFTER 06 are less prone to collapsing engine mount issues and head gasket issues.

    Have fun!

Frame rot if the frame was neglected, but everyone gets a free frame replacement which new vehicle buyers pay for. Another win for folks who only buy used cars.

Stock leaf springs, including TSB springs are trash.

Stock suspension is really meant only for smooth roads. Touching the suspension (for no more than 2” lift and better shocks) requires about another $500 for front end parts replacement (if corroded) if you want to achieve proper alignment.

Everything else is good, especially the transmission.

Clutch throw out bearing. Pretty much every 2nd gen will get a quiet squeal after 60K miles.

If you get an access cab and predominately haul stuff and not people, there are advantages to getting a ‘07-‘08.

Everyone has pretty much covered everything. But the one's with daytime running lights have an issue where it'll melt and crack the plastic in the headlights. Not a big issue but still technically a weakness lol
