    Hey Anyone,
I might need to upgrade my hitch from a class 4(the factory toyota hitch 5,000lbs) to a class 5
    https://www.extremeterrain.com/tacoma-class-v-multi-fit-trailer-hitch-15511.html

Can anyone tell me if this will fit and has anyone done this? I thought about taking mine to a fab shop and having them beef it up and sandblast it and repowder coat it, but I might as well get the one above if it will fit.

    I know, I need WxLxH......I don't know.

I had another thought........do the offroad bumpers have better towing capacity? As you can tell I need HEEEELP! LOL!

What do you need a class 5 hitch on a Tacoma for?
Those are generally for 3/4 ton and up trucks and a class 4 will tow way more than a Tacoma will pull.

I am thinking about weight, my factory hitch only goes to 5,000lbs. I just don't want my hitch to give out, bend when I'm going down the road if I do tow more than 5,500 lbs which I very well might have to.
    Suggestion?

Can the factory hitch be beefed up, like putting more square tube in the hitch and adding 1/2 steel on top so it won't warp, bend? Will something like that work?

Jfc. Your hitch is rated for what the Tacoma can tow (give or take 1000lbs). There's a safety factor of about 2-2.5 built into those ratings. Don't tow heavy shit with your Tacoma if you like your Tacoma. Get a full size if you need to regularly tow heavy stuff.

V6 Tacoma's with the Tow package are rated to tow 6400#, they wouldn't have put a hitch on them that wasn't capable of at least that.
As far as the hitch goes tongue weight is what you have to be concerned about with that big of a trailer.
Not that it's ideal to tow that much with one but the hitch would be the last thing I would be worried about failing.
I've never seen a Class V hitch on anything smaller than a 3/4 ton truck.

If your truck has the tow package then your hitch is rated for 7000 lbs plus. Class 4 hitches can handle up to 10,000 lbs. If you don’t have the tow package then you shouldn’t be towing more than about 3500 lbs. no matter what hitch you have.

I’ve towed an illegal amount of weight with our trucks and the hitch is not the limiting factor. You won’t be able to handle the truck/trailer safely FAR before the hitch breaks. I would actually think you’d break a leaf spring or damage the rear axle before breaking the hitch.

So I've seen all your stuff now I have decide what to do. My hitch had a sticker on it that said 5,000 lbs, before it fell off. Not sure if that was towing, tongue weight (seems a little high, you tell me).
All I want is a little more towing capacity.

And I will not get rid of my Tacoma, I have the frame recall, and tons of new parts. Tundras pull 8,000 lbs and Tacoma's pull 6,500 lbs. My tow bar and ball says, " 6,000" tow rating.

I'm probably going to upgrade to the Z36 brake package before I tow.
    Later and comment....thanks....Brian

You’ll have an oil cooler line connected to your oil filter housing, and also a pink fan clutch. Also a transmission fluid cooler/tiny radiator looking thing in front of your radiator behind your grill.

Look under your truck where the rear of the leaf spring is mounted to. see that thin metal mount? mine are bent just from years of lumber in the bed. No where near 4k pounds. I cant imagine what a trailer wound do to them. tacomas are great trucks except if you want to haul shit them. then they suck. People talk about the rear end wavey feeling when hauling thats because those mounts are under there flexing back and forth .

If you have the transmission cooler then you have the tow package, or someone just added it for fun.

Your towing capacity is based on way more than just what the hitch will handle. If you upgrade the capacity of the hitch, many other things (some that you cannot see) will now be under capacity. And if you're towing more than the rated capacity of the truck and get stopped, it's going to get dangerous and expensive.

If your truck has the towing package, leave everything as is and you'll be far better off.

I believe you have a manual tranny not an automatic. Manual trans do not have tranny coolers. That smaller radiator is for the a/c. You absolutely need to determine for sure if you have the tow package. If you have it then you tow capacity is about 6500 lbs. The you don’t need to do or change anything. If you don’t have the tow package then your tow capacity is around 3500 lbs. There is nothing you can do to increase the manufacturer’s tow rate capacity.

This is really easy. With tow package it’s 6500lbs, w/o it’s 3500lbs. No matter what you do you can’t tow more than those #s. We’ll you could but not safely.
