Correct, limited with tech package has built in nav, which is what I was referring to being displayed on the Home Screen.

If you don’t have built in nav, well there is no map to be shown.

    But I just use CarPlay.

Per google, definition of bootleg is “made, distributed, or sold illegally.”

What exactly is illegal about a 3rd gen?

Not that they are bad trucks.

3rd gens are the illicit facelift of the 2nd gen Tacoma. Toyota dropped the low end V6 in favor of a high reving V6. Toyota has limited the availability of the manual transmission on 3rd gen Tacomas, and Toyota stopped offering regular cab Tacomas due to how the 3rd gen is engineered.

2nd gen Tacomas offered a greater selection of options for the consumer over the 3rd gen.

Okay, 3rd gens are 2nd gen knock offs licensed by Toyota

Wow! I didn't expect a 3 page thread on a rant(mild rant). Thanks to all of you that responded. This is a great network. MY truck is a 2022 TRD Off Road Double cab(I knew it didn't have a sunglasses holder and understand the locking rear differential is more valuable if I ever need it) celestial silver. What happened to the coin holder? JUST KIDDING DON'T RESPOND

Wife has a 2016 Camry has to use phone for maps, my 2014 always showed were I was and going and had sunglasses holder and coin holder(thanks for reminding me)

before my 2nd Gen I always carried a Thomas Guide, how many remember those?
    Again no need to respond.

Once again I love my new truck, I am ranting(someone said whining) about the small stuff. (Not trying to turn it into a 2nd v 3rd gen. debate) lets put our efforts on solving real world problems.

    Much love to all
    JD

Brother, your posts seem to be centered on ragging on 3rd gens. Please tell me what your 2012 4 cylinder can do that these V6's you complain about cant do better?

Would I RATHER place my sunglasses in an overhead sunglass storage compartment instead of this chunky thing? Is it valid when the 2nd gen bros come in here pounding their chests because their trucks have not one, but TWO of these said holders? Does it matter that metal sunglasses become searingly hot when stored up there anyway? Yes, yes, and no.

I'm with you on the lamenting the rarity of the manual transmission. I had to go to a different state to find mine. BUT remember... they weren't offered on any double-cab 1st gen.

I'm not convinced that re-engineering is the reason why they'd drop the regular cab if it's basically the same truck under the sheetmetal, if for no other reason than demand and cost to produce.

    Work in progress...
I hear what Y'all are saying "complaining about the truck before he's even drove the damn thing." But, I kind of see the OP's point. I mean I traded a Ford, frigging, Focus in on my slightly used 2017 TRD Sport. Loved the truck, brought it home, went to program the garage door opener. WT ...F. No garage door opener are you shitting me? Read the manual, went on Google, went on You Tube, went to the Library well I don't really know where the Library is but I would have. No frigging garage door opener? Are Your shitting Me, Toyota? I figured it out, I made it work. I get by as best I can. Country Boy can survive. Sure wish this thing had a garage door opener. I don't even need a sunglass holder, I put my sunglasses on my head. I'm in the desert, if I'm awake my sunglasses are on my head. Well any ways, I see OP's point to a point. Damn, it's still a long ways to beer time...

3rd gens are mostly a 2nd gen with a facelift. Different engine in the V6, and a different auto trans on the 4 and the 6.

The truck got a face lift and a mostly new drive train. Factor in the complaints from 3rd gen OWNERS. IDK know if the complaints are legitimate, or even come from real owner's of 3rd gens. That's the information that's out there, so that's the info I have to use.

I would have to say based on that, the 3rd gens are not an improvement over the 2nd gens.

It's like Toyota built their own bootleg knock off Tacoma.

I don't belive 3rd gens are bad trucks or are worse than a 2nd gen. Any third gen is probably a better truck than my 2nd gen, as far as performace numbers go.

1st gens are the best gen, but Toyota was havily heavily influenced by the 2nd gen Ranger. When they designed the 1st gen Tacoma. You could call a 1st gen a knock of Tacoma, and you wouldn't be wrong. Toyota started selling the 1st gen in NA, when the rest of the world still got the Hilux/Toyota pick up to compete with the 2nd gen Ranger.

What was wrong with the Hilux? I believe it's a better truck than a Tacoma.

Yup, got my garage door opener through a guy on here. I'm still kinda wondering if the HomeLink mirror was a factory option or a dealer-installed thing.

Ford's interior game is sweet and it had better be. It's comforting for the inevitable timing chain, valve guides, turbo and transmission issues. At least the interior is nice and it has a garage door opener. Lol

Toyota should have put the 4.0 out of the current gen 4runner in the 3rd gen tacoma. I would easily sacrifice 1-2 mpg in my 3rd gen to have that power plant.

It all depends on the options you opt for when you get the truck. There is quite the difference between a bare-bones OR versus a fully loaded one. 2020+ models come with the power seat, Apple/Android CarPlay…. so at least start there. Blind spot monitor is nice too and that comes with the tech package.
