    If the ECM isn't online. You pretty much need to check power and grounds to the ECM.
    If all powers and grounds checkout, Then try an ECM.

    I'll see what I can find on the ECM. But I'm going to be honest.
    It might take me some time to respond. And 1999 service info SUCKS. (at least what I have does).

    #1 question is, Do you have the means to test wire pins CORRECTLY on a connector?
    Jamming the leads of a meter into the connector is NOT doing it correctly. And often times leads to creating more issues.
    It's not rocket science, a needle, smaller wire, safety pin will do........

    Yes, I have the means to check the pins on the plugs. I have previously completed a 3.4 swap on a 2nd gen T4R and did all the wiring and such. I had obtained wiring diagrams for both the donor and the recipient vehicles and spent months making sure things were connected correctly.

    I'm currently trying to find a diagram for this ECU.

    I forgot to mention....I deleted the cat about a year ago and have had a CEL for it. When this shit started, the CEL went away.

    CEL will go out when the ECM is off line.
    Which we have pretty much established by the scan tool not communicationg.

    If you don't have the CEL on with Engine OFF and Key ON, There is an ECM or power/ground issue to/from the ECM.

    I've found enough already to know that it is the white/red wire that provides power. And I do have 12.48 V to the ECM.

    And i just check all the ground wires from the plugs to the truck for continuity and all checked out fine. This is starting to look like the ecu took a shit.

    Quick glace gives we this at the ECM.
    See if it matches what you checked

    E5 plug = Power at the following pins: 1,2, 16
    1 = Black/Yellow wire
    2 = Black/Red wire
    16 = White/Red wire

    All Grounds look to be BROWN in color

    E7 Plug Pins: 8, 17 (grounds)

    E8 Plug Pins: 21, 30, 31 (grounds)

    On my 2.4 it would die, and pop the am2 fuse when pulling away from stop....after it warmed up.

    It was the ignition switch going out...

    that has to power up am1 and am2 branch to start engine

    make sure you're getting power down line on those....far side of the switch

    and by the way the scanner....any scanner will not connect to my ecm without the engine running.....its been that way for 10yrs

    With the ecm unplugged, should I be able to check continuity from 12+ to ground? I know there will be a load, but I would think there would be continuity if all was good.

    I've got 4 plugs. 1 has a white/red wire that has 12.4 V and it's pin 12. All my grounds are in this same plug. Pins 13, 24, 25, and 26.

    Manufacturing date is 09/98. So this might have some hold over wiring from a 98.

    The ecm part number is 89661-04470

    This is a non-Cali truck. These pin outs don't line up with what I have.

    You should see 12v from the pin to a ground.
    You can not do a continuity check on the powers.
    You can on the ground.

    So, pins with power when cheeked to a ground will show 12v.
    Ground pins when checked to ground will show continuity.

    I personally like to use a test light.
    Clip the end of a test light to a ground. (KNOWN GOOD GROUD)
    Check pins that are supposed to have power, it should light up the test light.

    For grounds, clip the light to a power.
    Test ground wires, they should light up.
