    Hi,

I recently put a new reman head on my '96 2rz 5 lug Tacoma. After installing everything I checked the valve clearances, on maybe 2 exhaust valves I was at the point where a 10 thou feeler gauge was loose but a 9 thou was pretty tight. So right on minumum spec or a hair below. All of the other valves were pretty good. I was told to just drive it a few hundred miles and recheck and adjust as necessary. How far should I go before checking the clearance again? What are the chances of valve damage with running @ 1 thou too tight?

And also related....can anyone recommend a good tool set to reshim valves? Bucket depressor and such?

    Thanks

A few hundred miles to settle in is good guidance. Since very few people ever even check the valves on their Tacos. there are probably thousands of them running around a few thou tight.

Ok sounds good. I will run a couple tanks through it and then re-check. I figured 1 thou wouldnt make a difference but want to make sure I dont have to pull that head ever again, especially not from negligence with valve clearances.

Too tight: When your valves are adjusted too tight, the engine is quieter but you run the risk of burning a valve (depending upon how much too tight the valve is adjusted).

Too loose: "A noisy valve is a happy valve..." ;)

Right, I understand this. But I guess what I am asking is how tight is too tight? I dont see how 1 thou could really make that much of a difference but?? I was planning on checking and readjusting after a few hundred miles of drive time. I am not too worried but more curious.
