Been driving my '96 5 lugger mostly around town and averaged 22.7 mpg all city driving. 2RZ-FE, 5 speed. Filled up today and averaged 25.7 mpg last tank with exactly 50/50 highway/city driving. I love this truck! Takes only 30 bucks to fill up, goes over 320 miles on a tank. I drive fairly easy, shifting @ 2-2.5k but I dont baby it. I bet I could get 28-29 mpg all highway @ 65ish mph. Fun to drive with the 5 speed too.

What kind of mileage are you guys getting with your 2RZ? Highway and city?

What you will find is there's a significant difference in mpg between the automatic and the manual 2.4 engines (I assume 2.7 and 3.4 as well to varying degree).

I have a mechanic bud that has a manual 2.4 that gets the exact same of mileage you got - 22 city, 25+ highway.

On my end having had 2 different automatic 2.4L Tacos, they both got significantly less ranging from 17 city, to 21-22 highway. Both of them got the same mileage except when I first got my new one I was getting 14mpg until I changed the fuel filter haha. (Note, all these tacos are xtracabs with stock 215 tires/suspension)

Part of me feels jealous how great the mpg on manual 2.4 tacos get as I got the 2.4 specifically for that gain, but I'm still content with mine and wouldn't switch if I could (at least for now). Was complaining how our 3.4 4runners were getting only 15mpg city, and going all the way down to a 2.4 only got me 2 more mpg was pretty saddening haha... I'm just a sucker for column shifters.

Interesting! I did not realize there was that big of a difference! I forgot to say but my truck is a single cab with 195/75/r14 tires. Bone stock.

I am glad I got the 5 speed then, if thats the kind of mileage the auto's get. It must really rob a lot of hp then compared to the manual. With the 5 speed its pretty peppy, it has some get up and go and to me doesen't feel under powered at all. A lot peppier than dad's 03 Camry with the 2.4 auto. That thing is a turd.

Hm, I've driven both manual and auto 2.4L and they drive just about the same I found, but thats not much of a pool size to go by to be certain. How they are mechanically (especially in the fuel delivery system department or throttle cable) would have a more significant factor drive quality wise if you asked me haha.

Also I do remember hearing the single cab manual gets the best mpg, so that being something you value you struck the right truck for sure! Haven't been able to verify it myself yet though.

Yeah good fuel mileage is a must for me. And this Tacoma is perfect in that respect. I put a transmission in a auto 2.4 for a guy one time but I forget whether I ever drove it. I dont think so. Seemed fairly similar mechanically.
