Here's the dilemma. Got a URD supercharger on my 2014 4-banger/4 speed auto with 265-70-17 BFG AT's.
Flame away, I know I shoulda bought the V6 and TRD super... :crapstorm:

Anyway, I can run the supercharger on stock size tires or NA with the big tires the transmission shifts fine. If I go supercharger AND big tires, the tranny slips and slams into gear when under any kind of load. Been working with URD since August but it seems this is the first install of big tires on the 4 cylinder/auto... didn't know it was an issue. Lucky me. The main reason I got the supercharger was to spin the bigger tires a little faster. I want the bigger tires for where I go play.

    My options seem to be:

    1. Try an IPT shift kit (~$600 - no guarantee it'll work, if not it's more money down the drain)

    2. Try and design a shift reprogram device from scratch (possible, I build and program similar stuff at work, but not a lot of time to tinker)

    3. Swap in a V6 transmission (possible? bell housing, flex plate, computer, etc?)

    4. Install a manual. (possible? crazy expensive?)

    5. Trade in the almost new BFG's for a set of stock diameter BFG's and lose $$ and ground clearance

    6. Sell the URD supercharger and go back to NA with the big tires (and lose my ass in wasted $$) :turtleride:

    7. Keep it as is and potentially frag the transmission

    8. Leave it in the garage as-is, say fuck-it and drive my Yaris cockroach from now on

I choose 5. If not... sell it and get a new 2016 V6 or similar. I hear one can get a Dodge Ram 1500 with V8 for less than 25K OTD...

How about sell it and buy a slightly used 2nd Gen V6. You'll waste less money doing that and you'll have everything you want and need.

    but boooooooosted!

Im surprised you are having issues, if i am not mistaken thats the same trans that was found on the 3.4L v6 auto's out of the 1st gen taco and 3rd gen 4 runner.... a bullet proof, fairly well shifting trans that not many have issues with, even when running the TRD super on that v6 which produced much more power n torque than a boosted 2TR.

I came to say the exact same thing. I have the 2.7L auto (A340F) and it definitely shifts hard when I'm hard on the gas. I imagine it would be exaggerated with even more power.

    Is it just hard shifts?

I actually traded a 2012 Ram Big Horn for my Taco. Hard to downsize and give up the comfort and power, but on the Jeep trails I play on it was just too big.

Yup, revs high then slams in gear, usually chirping the tires when it does.

I'd consider trading it, but I'd be out much of the 10k I've spent on upgrades plus a huge chunk from depreciation. Hosed in any event, trying to lessen the blow and still get a worthy ride.

Has anyone tried the shift kit? Is it worth a shit?

This should be option 9, and its the one I would have chosen.

Matt, if you are planning on having this truck for 5+ years, then trade in is truly your only pure option. All the money you dump into your current setup will be a sunk cost going forward, and at the end of the day you have a 4 cylinder and no matter what you do it wont have the power you need. Take the hit and trade in for a V6, you will be ahead of the game money wise and like moondeath said, it will have everything you need!

You may have asked this question with URD but I wonder what the transmission computer is "seeing" that is affecting the shifting. In other words is their a sensor input that be modified to reduce the amount of load/throttle position whatever to compensate. But after all you have done I would explore what Rock Lobster said with ITP. They may have the simple answer to the question and $600 more may get you down the road. Or switch the tires back, the loss will be even greater if you cant get it to be civil for a perspective buyer.

Yeah, I try to remember that even if the shift kit doesn't help the immediate issue, it's still a good upgrade especially with either just the SC or the bigger tires.

The SC actually makes it a fun ride and plenty of juice. I picked the smaller engine so if I chose to drive timid I could enjoy a little better gas mileage - another big reason I dumped the Ram. Even though gas prices are pretty low right now, I suspect it won't last too much longer (hence my cockroach as a daily driver).

Dan - I'd actually looked through the wiring and I think an interpretation module could pretty easily be done. Maybe with a basic stamp or simple embedded controller to modify the signal based on other input criteria (engine speed, throttle position, etc). I still can't believe there isn't a shift programmer available - hell, for that matter, a Jet or Superchip module. Good point on selling it. If I test drove it I'd pass in a heartbeat.

Removed the MF exhaust and put the stock tailpipe back on. Made a noticeable difference with shift "hit", but I also found a huge amount of soot in the tailpipe. Still shifting much harder than stock though, but much more tolerable.

Maybe the shift kit and a tune will get this thing dialed in after all - after I get back from deer hunting. Waited all year to stick one, and hoping to get my first double whammy - an elk and deer in one season. One down, one to go.

Not anxious to spend another grand but it's hopefully better than dumping the truck and losing 20. Probably going to dump the SS MF exhaust. Anyone interested?

Late revival but if you gernade your transmission have you thought about getting the IPT full built performance A340 transmission? Might help handle the boost!!image.jpg
