These have to be the two most incoherent, nonsensical posts back to back. This thread is over a year old. The piston rings went on the engine. I had it rebuilt, problem solved .

I agree. I read both of his posts and just decided not to say anything. Guy is saying a lot of irrelevant things. I dont think he realizes that most manufacturers have switched to lighter timing chains, lighter rings and such because of emissions/CAFE. Modern engines arent built like old engines, both in good ways and bad ways. I guess once he hits 200k+ he'll understand. Atleast these engines last trouble free until they start burning oil late in their life, which is still a good long haul. Plenty of other manufacturers have had issues with major oil burning by going too light with their pistons rings. Subaru, GM just to name two.

Yes I believe mine started acting up around 250k km. The first major low oil incident happened after completing Rubicon june2018. I attributed it to the rigors of the trail by October of 2018 the truck barely ran. Once it starts it's a quick decent

Mine is a 253k now and is consuming a lot of oil. I threw some of the ring gasket sealer shit from Walmart as a temporary fix and it seems to be holding.

I'm working on getting my ranger back on the road and next year I'll pull the motor out and rebuild it.

I have 269k on mine now and its drinking a quart every 2500 or so miles. Also, my oil dipstick is a liar, always reads full or over full and it's always a qt low when i drain it. Anyone else noticed this?

The dipstick is terrible on these trucks. Aside from there not being any crosshatching to hold oil to read it, the tube is always covered inside and you can't get a good reading.

When mine is below the minimum dot, mine seems to be a quart below

Yeah i may try hitting the bottom of the dipstick with a little sandpaper to see if that helps. it does seem like the tube is always covered though like you mentioned. I can get a solid reading after it sits overnight, but the second time i put it back and try to check again the tube is already covered.

Mine is stupid. It read full the other day, and then i only drained 5 qts out. Im sure there is some in the filter too, but not more than 1/3 of a qt or so

I did the sandpaper trick. It helps. And the truck only holds 5.9 quarts, so reading full is acceptable there.

The owners manual says to put 5 quarts in for an oil change if you're not changing the filter. 5.9 if you do change it

sorry for bringing up and old thread but I have posted in this in the past. I am currently sitting at about 220k miles. and burning about 1 qt for 500 miles driven. Had a doozy of a misfire this past weekend and was able to limp it home. Truck didnt pull any codes but I decided to swap the plugs and coil packs. I got this bad boy out of Cylinder 3. Ya, thats oil. this was by far the worst, cylinder 1 actually looked crusty like there was coolant in it, anyways, my question is, how long will these new plugs survive?

The real question is how long that motor will last

I think you might have a very leaky valve cover gasket that will keep fouling plugs

I'd be checking out the spark plug tube gasket as well. That's probably why you have oil on top of your plugs

Isn’t that part of the valve cover gasket? It usually is, hence my comment above

It is a one piece gasket on the 1GR, but they are separate on the 2TR

At about 17k miles on the odo, I burn way under 1/2 qt. per 5k miles.

Bizarre… doesn’t sound right if I’m bring honest. Mine never burned oil and even at 130k it doesn’t burn a drop
