:) The steel lines provide oil pressure to the cams, and to the intake cam. On the front of the intake cam is the device that will let the variable valve system work. It uses the oil pressure to engage and disengage the device. A lot of variable valve engines work like this.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
I may just be the only person who has this picture.

this is a comparison of the 22r (tall deck) and 2tr-fe

as you can imagine the 2tr-fe is a heavy SOB

Ah, I mistakenly assumed the lines distributed oil directly onto each lobe.

Its been awhile but I am pretty sure the steel line/loom has a hole for each cam lobe like your picturing.

Great read on oil pressure/VVTi. I wrecked my Tacoma at 671,000. I would be closing on one million now. This was the best and most low maintenance vehicle I have ever owned.
The 2TR-FE will start to burn oil at 350k miles. It's a $1000.00 valve stem seal repair or frequent top off. Good luck with smog check issues at half a million miles. Current specs call for GF-5 0W20 oil. Do yourself a favor and use Toyota Genuine motor oil. It is amongst the very lightest oils on the market and is one of the best. You will enjoy the best possible performance at $5-6/qt.

My 2.7 gen 1 was bombproof. Also sounded little like a time bomb when you first started it- ticking. But 230k miles without touching it once. Just oil and filters. Towing a lot too.

Mine started ticking when it's cold. It goes away after driving it a minute. What is it since the valves aren't adjustable? 2007 with 193,000 miles.

You are probably hearing piston slap...
The pistons are rocking very slightly in their bores until the engine has run long enough to generate enough heat to expand the metals and take up the bit of gap that is allowing the pistons to rock. That is my understanding anyway.
What I don't understand is, why can I distinguish a single slap as being louder than the others, when all 4 pistons are slapping? Or is it just one piston that is slapping? Doesn't really matter, I'm just curious. These things will run a *very* long time after the pistons start slapping.

So, no big deal. Let it warm up a little and press on. Thanks.

Thanks to this thread I bought one with 130k on it mid last year. Been daily driving it and wheeling it ever since, 145k now, seems legit. I get this weird low idle condition after stalling it on steep hills every now and then but no codes and it goes away soon so I'd have to say all is good!

96,xxx miles and still going strong. Other than regular PM, it had a water pump leak at 18,000 miles, replaced under warranty. Great engine.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Put 55k on my old one, not a single problem. Expecting the same long life out of my V6 now. Any Tacoma engine lasts forever! Had an older 3rd generation 4Runner in the shop today with the 2.7 and it had 420,970 miles on the odometer still running like a champ. The body was rusted and beat, definitely had seen better days but that old engine stilled hummed like a sewing machine.

How do you guys find that you start burning oil? I have found the dipstick on the 2TR-FE to be utterly unreadable....

When changing oil I put in between 5.5 and 6 qts.....I hope I am not screwing anything up..

    50,000 miles right now.

smells and smoke from the exhaust. I agree the dipstick did not do its job very well. I don't know how Toyota screwed that up.

When you are getting to the truck in the morning to go to work, check the oil before anything else. Just pull it straight out and read it. That is your best reading, since the tube isn't coated with oil yet.

Easiest way to "see" oil consumption, is to measure how much comes OUT of it. Catch the oil oil in your (empty) oil catch bucket, put in the new oil (6qt), and then pour the old oil back into the containers that the new oil came in.

I've ALWAYS noticed that it comes out short of what goes in, and no, I haven't been increasing the oil going in between changes. From the first oil change to now. 12 changes in total, it is consistently down by a bit more than 1 qt. I do my oil at 10,000 km intervals (6250 miles), and I'm at 126000 km total.

I usually buy a 5 qt jug and a 1. Adds up to 6. That all goes in, what comes out doesn't quite fill the 5qt jug.

Don't worry about it though, ALL engines (regardless of owner claims to "never burn a drop of oil" -- technical impossibility) will use SOME oil. You just want to make sure it doesn't use excessive oil.

Why is it burning that much oil?

I seriously hope you guys aren't putting 6 quarts in an engine that only takes 5...
