Well that would be purely in town mileage. Once I get out on the highway, I can get 20-21. I took a trip to Harlan, pretty much interstate the whole way. On the way down, with a full load of firewood, toolbox, and two fullsize spares, I got 19.1 mpg average. That is running between 85 and 90 for the most part.

so are the tranny ratios the same for the 5 and 6 lug? Meaning is overdrive still .81 and such?

    Hello All,

I want to get in on this thread. I have 2009 Access 4cyl, 2wd, 5sp, prerunner and average 22.2 all conditions. I actually get better mileage around town 23-24 because the engine doesn't work as hard. On freeway (in AZ) limits are 75 so mileage drops to 21 and below, especially with load.

I am interestd in leveling truck and running 285/75/16 Mich LTX on stock wheels, nothing to aggressive. If it gets too expensive (ie, gears, shocks, blocks, etc) I will call it off and just run the 265/75s.

Good to be here. Thoughts, opinions, experiences?

    Thanks in advance

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
285's aren't going to work on stock wheels unless you get get spacers (or different rims with a BS of 4.5 or less). You will hit the UCA's.

Thats a bummer. I'm not scared of the wheel being a bit too narrow. I ran 315/70-17 on a 17x7.5 wheel for 100k miles on a ford w/ zero probs.

Are there steering limiters. I really like the stock wheels so don't want to buy aftermarket. When you say hit, is it constant or a little rub?

How about the gearing and power concerns.

I also measured and it looks like my truck has about 1.5-2" rake. Don't know if I need tsb.

The tire will hit the UCA so it will be a constant rub. You will also rub on some plastic if it is not lifted, and possibly the cab mount. I cannot speak for the gearing.

Ya for every positive there's a negative and that's it! He mentioned not worrying about gas mileage and such. I think he wouldn't be putting too much stress, wear and tear on the engine with the 4.88 unless he did a considerable amount of freeway driving, otherwise if it a great majority city driving and offroading 4.88 would be golden...he could always buy a 1000 dollar beater for those long trips :)

i think it all depends on the terrain u drive and what u use the truck for...
4.88 are great for hills and mountains...not so much for flat.
most i would go on the 4cyl would 4.56 and below.

just make sure u pick correctly because its expensive to change ur mind after the install is done

So even lifted the uca will be a constant rub with stock wheels?

I understand the 265/75-16s fit with no mods correct?

Do you guys think 4.88's would be an overkill if I was to run 34/11.5 inch tires?

no. probably just what doc ordered. 4 cyl need to wind out to make their power. Assuming you came with 30.5' and 4.10s:

    34/30.5=1.115
4.10x1.115=4.57 adjusted gear to return stock power level...

however, every lb of rotating mass has the equivalent of 15 static lbs. those tires will be heavy and could use the mechanical advantage.

In fact, fuel mapping on newer vehicles is more dependant on load than rpm. lower gears = less load = less fuel injected (to a point).

rpms will be higher, but clutch/tranny with thank you.

now if the front carrier requires all kinds of upgrades and 4.88 is dramatically weaker due to pinion size etc, (as can be the case with fords and danas), the 4.56 will treat you right. I always opt for slightly lower when I have a choice).

Be mindful of axleshafts and driveline angles, etc, but from the look of your truck you obviously know what you are doing. sorry if this is redundant common knowledge. great looking rig btw...

Thanks for the useful information. So your saying 4.56 gears are the way to go. This will bring me back to stock power right? I understand that the height of the tire calls for 4.56 gears but is the extra with and height going to slow it down drastically? Also for 4.56 gears do i need a new carrier for the front diff or do i just need the ring and pinion gear? Sorry for all the questions. And i really appreciate your help.

    Thanks Mike

There has to be someone with a 05+ tacoma 4cyl running 33's with either 4.56's or 4.88's, but they dont chime in on their thoughts.

I want to want my rpms in fifth gear will be at if im cruising at 65mph on a flat road with 4.56's and also the difference with 4.88's.

Im looking for the same thing. Drew02a i know has 4.56 gears and he just put 255/85's on. They are thinner than the 285's though.

I have talked to drew02a for the past 3 months haha and he convinced me to go with the 4.56. He is rarly on here anymore it seems :( but look into his build and last I talked to him the online rpm calc I use was right on the money with what he was running which was about 2.4-2.5k at 65
