I've got my share of miles- 43k right now. It would be more, but I didn't have the truck for about 2 months after my wreck when they were fixing it.

so how many people have done a gear swap? It looks like 315s need 4.60s or so...the closest matches are 4.56 and 4.88. Has anyone gone lower than stock. I think I'd need the extra power to move the big tires and lifted truck. How is mileage for you guys will 33s? 35s?

    You'll want 4.56 or 4.88 for 33s

    4.88 or 5.29 for 35s

I'm still getting 20+ mpg with 33s. They're the skinny ones though (255/85/16) which I would recommend.

Drew-i didn't see your other post.

Thanks for the reply on the gears, I was thinking 4.88s especially with 4 cylinder. Have you done gears in your truck? I'm getting 22 and didn't want to fall below 20 average.

Yeah, I've got 4.56 gears. Re-gearing is the only way keep stock efficiency with bigger tires. If you look about 1 page back there's a good recap of my experience with tires, gearing, and efficiency.

Then how can you stand the loss of power driving with the stock 4.10s and 33" tires?

That shouldn't make any difference, they use the same transmissions so the final ratio should still be the same.

Do you have an auto tranny? Having the wrong gearing in an auto isn't as noticeable.

Final ratio is the ratio after taking into account the transmission gearing, differential gearing, and tire size

** UPDATED with info for ALL models
ALL of the V6 prerunners and 4x4s have 3.73 gears
ALL of the I4 prerunners and 4x4s have 4.10 gears
ALL 5-lug Autos have 3.58 gears
    ALL 5-lug 5-speeds have 3.31 gears

Since you have the same transmission as the prerunners and 4x4s, you're going to need the same gears for the same tires as they do if you want to keep the stock ratio Toyota engineered.

    nice !
so me having 4.10 is equal to ur 4.56

so for the 5 lug guys....
    4.10s or 4.56 for 33
    for the 6 lugs...
    4.56 or 4.88 for 33

not at all. You having 4.56 would be equal to my 4.56

To keep stock ratios with ANY 4cyl Tacoma, you need 4.56 gears for 33s. With 4.10 gears you are still losing a ton of power.
