Anybody know a good place to source a good reman engine? After my first mechanic kept saying my truck was fine despite it idling poorly and being unable to diagnose it myself I took it to another shop and it has no usable compression in 2 cylinders even after a wet test. From what I can tell it either needs a total rebuild or a swap. I have a new truck now but I'd like to keep this one as a spare vehicle since it got decent mpg and fits in parking spots downtown.

I mean... pull the head and have a look, could just need some new valve seats / head refresh.

Leakdown test would tell you if it needs a head pull or a whole engine

Yeah leak down will identify where the compression is being lost and what needs to be repaired to fix it.

I would much rather buy a used engine out of a running vehicle or at least from a local supplier with mileage and compression check than gamble on a remanned engine where they throw in cheap bearings and parts and have a warranty that doesn’t cover the labor of removing it and replacing it and shipping it back to them.

The compression tests came back with 90 psi on cylinders 1 and 2. 3 and 4 had 120-130 psi. A wet test had no difference

Unfortunately I don't have a garage or safe area to pull the motor apart to look.

Yes the compression is bad but a leakdown test is different than a compression test. Leakdown would tell you where the compression is being lost. I get just installing a whole new (used) junkyard engine but it might be helpful to know of you need just a cylinder head. It would expand your available options for repair

I mean, it's probably the head or headgasket.. because you'd have to have a couple holes in pistons or bent rods to have that low of compression readings. And it's not likely to have a lower block with damage in all 4 holes..
