Please forgive my stupidity, but what sub-categories are you referring to? :notsure: I'm assuming the other different models numbers such as the Baofeng BF-F9 V2+?

The BF-F9 is an 8W radio vs the 4W of the UV-5R. The more wattage, the better your "reach". But, with that said, the same is not necessarily so for the receiving/transmitting party you are communicating with. Meaning, if all they have is 4W, then they will, unlikely, be able to transmit the same distance (i.e. radio-to-radio). If you can afford the 8W, then I would go that route, but most, that I'm aware of, have the 4W radio.

If you want to increase your range that much more, even for a 4W, then I would invest in the:
    https://www.amazon.com/TNP-UT-72-Ra...5114449&sr=1-2-catcorr&keywords=ut-72+antenna

It does NOT add wattage to increase range, but it helps increase range due to it being outside of your cab. When transmitting from within the cab of your truck, you are significantly decreasing the range of your radio. It is more than good enough to transmit to the person directly in front/back of you and even further than that, but you will ALWAYS get best results when the antenna is outside!!!

Either way, the 4W is a 4W and the 8W is an 8W, but having the antenna outside is always a better way to go overall!!!

I would also recommend getting a MIC or get a radio that comes with the MIC. At that point, you can sort of think of your radio as a mobile unit now. A very weak mobile unit, but at least you're not having to hold the radio while transmitting just like @climbhigher23 setup. I do the very same thing myself as him. I'm in the process of redoing my RF cable for my CB radio, but I can show you and explain to you how my setup is.

For now, I would just get the radio 4W or 8W, whichever you can afford and forgo the external magmount until I can talk to you a little more directly and I can possibly show you options that you might like better? Some people don't like spending any more than they need to when it comes to radios and setups.

Why did you put the factory d ring back on there?

I figured I'd put mine in a different spot since the bed stiffeners have a tie down point right there.

This is the one I have. So far, I have no complaints. It comes with way more stuff for a little extra cash compared to just the radio. It would be more expensive to buy everything separate. The longer antenna came in handy when running the Mojave Trail last week.
