351EA39C-CB0F-41E5-9634-9FA01BBF480D.jpg I love my 2wd, just bought it in February & been modding it since. Occasionally, i wish is had a 4wd, only because of these forums & seeing people offroad with them, but I never offroad...my previous full size truck was a Ram 1500 2wd and had no intentions on taking it offroad, but this one...only every once in a while, and nothing crazy, as i do 95% highway driving and some city driving. I did lift it & put on some larger tires, just in case i want to hit some small trails or dirt roads lol!

If you don’t need a 4x4 in the first place why add 4x4 type stuff? Just save your money - which ostensibly is what you did it for - drive what you got and enjoy it.

If you feel you screwed up and and really need one, then trade it in and get an OR. As was already mentioned, don’t try to make it into something it’s not.

Best advice on the thread. Especially if you’re trying to be responsible with money.

A 2wd truck can certainly benefit from a lift and tires and locker if he wants to see dryland dirt like Texas or California

Sure but I thought the reason he didn't go with the OR was because he wanted to save money and didn’t need any of that stuff in the first place? Maybe I’m wrong, whatever.

Just seems silly to me to go back and spend all that money you tried to save. He asked so I’m just giving my opinion. If it was me, I’d just trade it in. And start over with what I actually wanted but that’s just me, YMMV...

Sometimes after awhile you realize you actually wanna do some camping or take dirt roads and then question your purchase. At first you had no interest in this. Then you see the other badass overland rigs and wanna join in cuz they look badass. 90% of those badass trucks don't see enough dirt to justify the money spent on mods. Most of the camping they do can be done with a smartly modded 2wd truck if that's all the OP has. I agree it's best to get the right truck first, but in the case of not wanting to take a loss on the trade in, you can always do a decent lift and tires and get to plenty of amazing places.

That’s all true, but at the end of the year I think there’s going to be some pretty good incentives on the 2019’s. Might be a good opportunity for a trade in.

Sometimes life's not about the destination, but the build.

They’re expensive builds for sure, but probably a blast to do if you have the means.

I say if you really want a 4x4 and have the skills then convert it. If not, then trade it. If you lose $4k on the trade (or spend $4k addition for 4wd) plus the $4k in taxes, a new 4wd truck costs $8k. You can convert it for less than $3k if you do the work yourself. There are options. Pick the one you want and don’t listen to anyone else.

Do you lose any safety features or braking systems in a conversion?

No. You don’t change anything with the braking system or any safety features.

I had a lot of nagging doubts the first few weeks after I bought my truck. I've never done any serious off-roading or got a vehicle stuck because I didn't have 4x4, but I started thinking that maybe I would want to go off-roading now that I have a Tacoma.

It's been a year now and I'm glad I didn't panic and trade it or anything. I simply don't need 4x4 in this weather/terrain, and I don't even have enough time for the expensive hobbies I already have. If I lived somewhere else it might be a different story, but the 2WD Taco is perfect for my needs.

Can't speak for them, but I've been considering a 3/2 lift on my 2WD because I'm in Houston and it floods pretty regularly these days. My house is high and dry, but the entrances to the neighborhood aren't and a little extra breathing room would be nice. If I do it I won't be spending the money for a fancy off road suspension I won't use, though - looking at the $250 kit from Low Range Off-Road.

I've added suspension upgrades (Kings, Total Chaos UCAs, and ICON AAL) and have zero remorse. I bought a 2018 OR 2WD and love it. When I bought it, I only imagined doing a little bit of off-roading and camping - but nothing too technical. Admittedly, I had no idea as to the capabilities of the Tacoma -- but I'm very happy to have bought the OR with the locker. When I trade my truck in, I will probably go with a 4WD OR, because I now have that itch for steeper, technical stuff! BUT... I LOVE my current truck! I cleared 5 of the not so crazy off shoots at Cleghorn and had a great time! This truck is still very capable, especially with the rear locker. When I trade it in -- in probably 2021, I will basically strip it back to stock, get the Kings re-worked, and transfer the suspension over to the new truck. Until then, I know my limitations and still have a blast on the trails. I haven't been stuck - YET....

I live in Galveston, did the bilstien 5100 shocks 1.5" notch with stock springs in the front and 32" tires. Helped a ton down here when it floods.
