You should be aight dude. Air down a tiny tiny bit, and toe the pedal. I haven't lived by a beach in 4 years, but in the AZ sand 2wd works as long as you know how to handle your equipment. Good luck :)

I live on the coast... I have seen so many 4x4 vehicles getting stuck in the sand....I tell them...its not mud...sand is totally different than mud, obviously.. I wouldnt recommend off roading in it. going to the beach to chill...now thats cool..You want to go off roading...go mudding

I would a 100 times rather wheel in sand than mud! No mystery to sand... if you start to bog down, stop and let more air out of the tires... it is that easy!!!

Mud is a mess... and you don't know how deep it is or what is under it... I have wheeled in both and prefer sand... also sand is clean... you can dig it away from your tires if you get stuck (before airing down), and you remain clean and dry as well.

Anybody who gets stuck and sand and doesn't let the air out of their tires to drive out themselves deserves a $300 tow bill! Dumb a@#!

Why not I use to take my Ford Superduty Diesel 4x4 in the deep sand in glamis all the time.

I have seen 2WD BIG motorhomes on the sand in Baja... big tires DEFLATED is how... It is all about air pressure not vehicle size!

Here is another example... big, heavy custom 4WD van with front and rear lockers...

When we found him, he had crossed over the beach and began to head towards our camp, which was 2 miles up the beach... With too much air in the tires, the 454 V-8 and 4WD and ARB locked differentials didn't do more than dig in...

    710Shell014_ea42b27b0c40eb1664a7dfb9f4f8a9645c7428e7.jpg

Once enough air was removed, Art got 'floatation' and was as happy as a kid in a candy store! He drove up and down the beach with that monster of his and was all smiles!

2WD/ 4WD/ Big Rig/ Small Car... doesn't matter at all... Just DEFLATE your tires! down to 15 psi or as much as to 8 psi... depends on tires, vehicle, sand type.

I'd try it in my prerunner...at least if I had another guy along who could pull my out if I did get stuck.

I haven't driven through much sand, but what I did do I did with full pressure. Airing down would've helped, but I don't have an air compressor and I don't want to drive home on really low tires.

BEFORE you take a four wheeling trip anywhere (and specially to sand), you should have a good electric air pump and a tire plug repair kit. This is basic Four Wheeling 101. You refill the tires when you get out of the sand!

You don't need someone to pull you out IF you deflate the tires... You can get out of a sand stuck on your own... I know, even with 4WD, I have gotten stuck in the sand and dunes in years past... Usually because I try and drive it at the higher pressure first.

Wheeling 101 says never wheel alone... so... don't contradict yourself David :D

Also, with good tires (even the BFG Rugged Fails are ok) to run slower speed (no more than about 55mph) a short distance to a gas station to fill up.... done it plenty of times. Just be careful and realize you have to be extra cautious. Not recommending it but if you don't have a pump or your pump died... it'll work.

I actually rarely go to Baja with others... but it is fun when I do. Mision Santa Maria is one of the runs that you should have other vehicles with... but when we go to Shell Island, usually it is just us. The last Baja trip (Las Pintas in Sept, see link below) we were solo. I got a hole in the Rugged Fails... plugged it, refilled the air with my pump, went back to El Rosario to have it patched... and returned to continue the Las Pintas run.

Yes... if a station is close by... and at 10-15 psi you could go slowly to it... and maybe only wear the sidewalls... BUT WHY... when a super fast pump is about $50 at Harbor Freight... or a slower one at any auto parts store for $25-$35?
